Henry Truelove was born in 1827 in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England.1 He was the son of Henry Truelove and Sarah Ann Reeve.1 He was baptised on 5 January 1829 in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England, Henry was baptised with his siblings Sarah and William.1,2 He was listed on the census of 7 June 1841 in High Street, Stony Strafford, Buckinghamshire, England, as living with who I believe to be his uncle Thomas and aunt Elizabeth. He is listed as a confectioner. I think maybe he was working for his Uncle perhaps after he had completed his apprenticeship with him.3 Henry came to Australia with his younger brother James.arriving in Australia in March 1853 on board the ship "Athlone".1 He married Anna Hughes, daughter of William Hughes and Catherine Hill, on 1 October 1856 in Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia, They soon moved to Tarangower (now Maldon) where their first child Catherine (Kate) was born in 1858. In 1859 the family moved to Golden Square also in the Sandhurst district. Here Henry and James started the Truelove Brothers Bakery. The bakery was on the left side of the main road from Sandhurst to Echuca. Henry and Anna 13 children (5 boys and 8 girls) had the following children while at Golden Square -
1859 Sarah Anne who died in infancy
1860 Sarah Ann who married Warren Smith in 1882
1862 Ellen Jane who died aged 16 months
1864 Mary who died in infancy
1865 Henry James who died in infancy
1866 Harry who married Polly Nicholls in 1903
Sarah Anne, Ellen Jane, Mary and Henry James were all buried together at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery near Golden Square. A headstone is still there.
In 1865 Henry opened the Wheatsheaf Hotel opposite the Bakery in what is now called High Street. In 1867 the hotel collapsed into underground mine workings. After this Henry and family moved north to Eaglehawk Gully and Myers Town (now Myers Flat) and here in 1868 Florence was born but died in infancy.
Later in 1868 the family moved to Graytown about 50 km to the east. Gold had just been discovered there. Two more children, Ellen and James, were born here but both died in 1870. A large flood also hit Graytown in 1870 wiping out most of the buildings and gold pits so the family returned to Sandhurst. Here Henry opened a grocery in the Beehive stores. In 1871 a fire destroyed the Beehive stores. Two more children were born in Sandhurst -
1872 John who married Alma Nicholas in 1903
1874 Frederick James who married Margaret McEvoy in 1902
In 1876 Henry and his family moved to Cungegong Creek (now Frampton) near Cootamundra in NSW and set up another bakery and general store to supply the local railway workers. Here one more child Annie Eleanor Olivier (Nell) was born in 1878. Nell married Jacob Jones in 1901.
Henry opened the Billabong Hotel and store near the site of the stone quarry and brick kiln 3 km west of Illabo. By 1883 he had also acquired 136 acres of land (now part of Clearview) near Illabo. Henry was one of 100 citizens who signed a petition for the incorporation of the town of Junee in 1885.1 His wife Anna died on 27 December 1889 in Junee, New South Wales, Australia, from Hepatitis and Cirrhosis. Her mother had died of the same illness 9 years earlier.1 He married Mary Elizabeth McGinley, daughter of William Hughes and Catherine Hill, in 1891 in Victoria, Australia, the couple had to go to Victoria to be married as such a marriage was illegal in New South Wales. Mary's children were John Charles (1864-67), William Robert (1865-69), Dominick (1867-), Catherine (1869-), Mary Jane (1874-), Patrick James (1875-76) and Peter (1877-).1 In 1899 the Union Bank of Australia foreclosed on Henry’s mortgage and his property was sold in 1901. Henry lived with Mary in Junee for some time and then moved to live with his son Harry at Elmavale, Illabo.1 Henry died on 21 October 1915 in Junee, New South Wales, Australia, from heart failure.1
