Randal Tunley was born on 22 November 1879 in Colliery Houses, Mainsforth, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of James Tunley and Annie Ollier.2 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Arlecdon, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the son of James Harris.3 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Arlecdon, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the son of James Harris.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 2 Hut, Easton Lane, Portland, Dorset, England, he was listed as the grandson of John Brown Ralph was listed as a navvy.5 He married Alice Mary Hendy on 31 May 1905 in St Peter's, The Grove, Portland, Dorset, England, The church was built by prisoners, housed at nearby Grove Prison who also worked on the Portland Harbour breakwater. It was completed in 1872 but now redundant, privately owned and not open to the public.6,2

On 12 December 1929 he arrived at Liverpool on board "Apapa" (British and Afican Steam Navigation Company) from Lagos (Randal had boarded here) via Accra, Monrovia, Freetown, Takoradi, Teneriffe. Randal's address 32,South Mall,Newport Isle of Wight. On 28 August 1931 he arrived at Plymouth/London on board "Mantola" from Beira (Mozambique) via Dar-es-Salaam, Zanzibar, Tanga, Mombasa, Port Said, Marseilles, Plymouth. He left from Tanganyika Randal's address 65, St.Johns Road Newport Isle of Wight. His occupation in each was given as a "diver."2 He moved back to the Isle of Wight, where he became a Parkhurst prison warder. His wife's roots were on the Island and his children were brought up there in the 1920s.2 Randal died on 8 August 1946 in Newport, Isle of Wight, England, aged 66.2

James Tunley was born in 1845 in Stone, Staffordshire, England, It is thought this is the correct birth although in GRO index the surname is TRUNDLEY.1,2 He was the son of Ralph Tunley.1 He married Annie Ollier, daughter of George Ollier and Grace Johnson, on 11 October 1879 in Hexham Register Office, Hexham, Northumberland, England, James was the manager of a stone quarry in Colwell near Hexham. Annie's father was given as George a deceased quarryman. It is believed he was not dead but since Annie was only 18 she would have need his permission had he been alive to marry.3,1 James was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in Arlecdon, Lancashire, England, James was a general labourer living with his wife and two sons, William was three months old.4 James was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in Arlecdon, Lancashire, England, James was a general labourer living with his wife and children all called Harris.5 James died in 1900.1

Ralph Tunley was born about 1803.2 Ralph died on 24 October 1869 rather sadly drowning in the River Trent, according to his gravestone, which is West of the All Saints Church in Sandon. He had been a gardener at Sandon Hall.1,2
