William and Mary are described as husband and wife on the 1891 and 1901 census returns.^1,2 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 19 Mill Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, she was listed as a boarder of Henry Hopper and his wife. Henry was a brass finisher and William was listed as one also. I think this is incorrect and probably an assumption on the part of the enumerator or Henry. William and Mary were listed as husband and wife. I belie this to be untrue, William's wife Christina was living in Gateshead with their children.³ In the census of 31 March 1901 in 10 Foster Street, Jarrow, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of William Frederick Calow.⁴ Mary died in 1945 in Gateshead, Durham, England.⁵
