     William Grainger was born about 1878 in Trimdon Colliery, Durham, England.1 He married Ellen Greathead, daughter of Mark Greathead and Sarah Jane Hutton, in 1901 in Sedgefield, Durham, England.2 William was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 32 Wilkinson Street, Hesleden, Durham, England, William was a waiter on the coal mine bank living with his wife and the two surviving children in their two roomed home. They had lost three other children before 1911.3
