     James Dobson Howes was born in 1857 in Hartlepool, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of James Howes and Jane Lamb.1 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Prisick Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Jane Howes Jane was listed as the head of the household and a seaman's wife living with her three children.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 75 Charles Street, Jarrow, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of James Howes James was a smith.4 He married Jane Ina Davidson in 1878 in South Shields, Durham, England.1,5 James was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 24 Wear Street, Jarrow, Durham, England, James was a plumber living with his wife and small son.6 James was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in 4 James Street, Jarrow, Durham, England, James was a plumber living with his wife and children. His youngest William was only five months old.7 James was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 54, 56 and 58 Princess Street, Jarrow, Durham, England, James was a ship plumber living with his wife, children and father.8 James was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 55 Princess Street, South Shields, Durham, England, James was a retired plumber in the shipyard living with his wife and children in their four roomed home.
