Francis Joseph Greathead was born in 1855 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England.2,3 He was the son of Francis Greathead and Annie White. He was baptised on 12 November 1855 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England, his father was an Excise Man.4,5 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Reeth, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Annie Greathead Francis was a scholar and lived with his widowed Mum.6 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Bargate, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Annie Greathead Francis was a scholar.7 In the Queens Bench on 4 June 1874 Francis who was living in Deddington in Oxford became bound to serve under Articles of Clerkship for five years to William Kinch, a practicing Attorney in the County of Oxford. His mother Ann on 25 September 1874 took on the oath with her son, Francis who was still a minor.8 He married Elizabeth Eleanor Bennett, daughter of Elias Bennett, on 23 July 1879 in St Jude's, Brixton Street, Lambeth, London, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by William Adons and Louise Fulwell. Francis was described as a solicitor's articled clerk living at 201 Raitor Road while Elizabeth came from Deddington in Oxfordshire.9,10 In January 1880 it was reported in the Jackson's Oxford Journal that Francis who was for many years a clerk in the offices of William Kinch, of this town, had successfully passed his final examination, and been duly admitted a Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Judicature. He commenced his practice in Richmond, Yorkshire.11,8 On 8 December 1880 three men were charged with assaulting Francis. The previous Tuesday Francis had been at Richmond Moor Fair and was returning home on horseback between six and seven o'clock in the evening by way of Marske. He was struck on the side of his head with a nobbed stick and knocking hito the ground. He was struck again several times and pelted with stones. An innkeeper from Reeth arrived just in time and assisted him back on his horse. Upon arrival in Reeth he visited the doctor. The bench fines each of the me £4 with costs.12 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Reeth, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Annie Greathead Francis was a solicitor.13 Francis was appointed Clerk to the Reeth Board of Guardians and to the Rural Sanitary Authority Committee in April 1884.14 Francis was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in Reeth, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, Francis was a solicitor.15 On 13 January 1894 Francis, a Swaledale solicitor appeared at the Richmond County Petty Sessions before Mr C G Tate and Captain Smithson. He was summoned to show cause why he should not contribute to the maintenance of an illigitimate child seven years old, and the daughter of Mrs Helena Thompson, a young widow. An order for 4s per week was made.16 Her mother Annie died on 30 June 1894.17,18 He received probate on his mothers estate in York on 24 October 1894. Her personal effects were valued at £251 1s 0d.18 Francis died on 29 November 1894 in Reeth, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, In the Leeds Mercury of 8 December Francis was described as Clerk to the Board of Guardians, the Marrisk School Board, Superintendant Registrar and Conservative Agent. Thomas Greathead was born in 1877 in Bishop Auckland, Durham, England.3 He was the son of John Greathead and Sarah Ann W Stonebanks. In the census of 3 April 1881 in 26 Low Thistelflat, North Bedburn, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead.4 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 28 Blue Row, Bishop Auckland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Thomas was a scholar.5 He married Kate Von Kaufmann, daughter of Francis Adams and Clarissa Hinds, on 10 November 1900 in Register Office, Darlington, Durham, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Isaac McClurg and Arthur Hinchley. Thomas was a coal miner like his father John Greathead. He gave his address as 1 Commercial Street, Willington. Kate gave her address as 26 Commercial Street, Willington, and stated she was a widow.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 1 Newcombs Yard, Willington, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead Thomas was a brick yard labourer.7 He married Annie Henderson on 26 October 1901 in Morpeth, Northumberland, England.8,9 Thomas was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 3 Mitchell Street, Wallsend on Tyne, Northumberland, England, Thomas was a coal miner hewer living with his wife, living in their three roomed home. Sadly their two children had died in infancy.10 When Thomas enlisted on 19 January 1918 he gave his wife as next of kin and her address as 83 Laurel Street, Wallsend on Tyne. He was 5 foot 6¾ inches tall and had a chest measurement of 37 inches. He was a miner. He was discharged on 30 April 1920.9,11 Thomas was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 83 Laurel Street, Wallsend, Northumberland, England, Thomas was a stone shifter in the Church G pit mine working for Wallsend & Hebburn Coal Company but was out of work. He was living with his wife.12 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Thomas was listed as living at 14 Gordon Square, Wallsend, Northumberland, England, with his wife Annie. John was a fitters labourer.13 His wife Annie died on 1950 in Northumberland, England.2,14 John died in 1950 in Claro, Yorkshire, England, he is registered under the name of John T Greathead. The name of his brother who died in infancy. I believe he assumed his details several times during his life.2,1,15 Thomas was buried in St Stephen's Cemetery, Willington, Durham, England.1
