She married James Bertram Rolfe in 1938 in Wandsworth, London, England.4 Joan and James were divorced.5 She married Kenneth Stanley Smith, son of Reginald Burnaby Smith and Ethel Jane Greathead, on 21 October 1946 in Register Office, Edmonton, London, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Reginald Burnaby Smith and Ernest James Rolfe. Kenneth was a Licensee's Manager living at 63 Wolves Lane and his father a printer's compositor. Joan lived at 20 Minnis Bay Road, Birchington and her father a Laundry Proprietor.1,6,7 Her husband Kenneth died on 1979 in Enfield, Middlesex, England.1,8 Joan died in July 1985 in Hackney, London, England.9

     Helen Maria Ridgway was born about 1820 in Hanley, Staffordshire, England.1 She married John Temperley in 1856 in West Derby, Lancashire, England.2 In the census of 7 April 1861 in The Elms, Upton Lane, West Ham, London, England, she was listed as the wife of John Temperley.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Ben Rhydding, Ilkley, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the visitor of a Physician MD William McLeod. Her husband was at home in Dulwich. Ben Rhydding was about a mile from the village of Ilkley (the Olicana of the Romans), and on a bold eminence overlooking the picturesque valley of the Wharfe, stood the edifice of Ben Rhydding, devoted to the treatment of diseases by means of Hydropathy, and for the reception of Visitors. The pure springs and exhilarating air, as well as the extensive and varied scenery of the district around Ilkley, have long made it a favourite resort. Here, accordingly, was erected, at an expense of fully £30,000, the establishment of Ben Rhydding. The estate consists of about 100 acres of ground, the greater part of which was laid out with a view to the advantage and pleasure of the patients and visitors, affording them the opportunity of varied exercise, and communicating with the extensive moors which crown the hills for many miles on both sides of the valley of the Wharfe. The house was furnished with every accommodation and comfort; nor have any means been neglected to obtain for the invalid and visitor the usages and attention of a private home. The dining-room and drawing-room are lofty and spacious dining-room and drawing-room are lofty and spacious; and there are twelve private sitting-rooms, all commanding beautiful views. On a large terrace adjoining the house, a covered Arcade or Gymnasium had been erected, measuring 115 feet long by 59 feet wide, which afforded constant opportunities of amusement and exercise, in all sorts of weather, and at all seasons. During winter and spring it was heated by hot-water pipes, and lighted in the evenings by means of gas. Besides the Gymnasium, there is added to Ben Rhydding a Reading-room, containing a supply of Newspapers. A Billiard-room, Bowling-green, American Bowling-alley, and Racket-court, are likewise attached to the Establishment, together with gymnastic apparatus suited to various degrees of strength, and fitted for various kinds of muscular action. Terms for Patients and Vistors. Patients. Board, lodging, medical attendance, bath-servant, Roman bath, and the other baths, per week £8 13s 6d Two of a family, patients, each £8 10s. Patients under twelve years of age £2 12s 6d. Clergymen are received as Patients on Visitors' terms. All other Baths and Bath Attendants are included in the above charges. Blankets, Sheets, and Towels, for Bathing, can be purchased or hired in the house, or Patients ean bring their own. Visitors. Board and lodging, per week £3 0s 0d accompanying a patient £2 13s 6d for a child under twelve years £2 0s 0d for a child under six years £1 5s 0d for private servants— men .£1 10s 6d, women £1 4s 6d per day, if for less than a week 9s 0d Private sitting-room, per day 8s. to £4 6s 0d per week 21s. to £1 10s 0d Bath attendants, waiters, chembermaids, porters, and boots, were included in the above Charges. There were no Extra Charges.4 Her husband John died on 6 March 1876 in Camberwell, London, England.5,6 Helen appeared in the Times newspaper of 21 June 1878 and was left in her husband John's will his household furniture and effects and an immediate legacy of £200 abolutely, and for life his residance and £1,500 per annum. Upon her death or remarriage the house was to go to his son Henry.5 Helen died on 18 January 1886 in Torfells, Weston Super Mare, Somerset, England, Her death appeared in the Times newspaper of 26 January 1886.7,8 The will of Helen was proved on 26 March 1886 in the Principal Registry by Edward Akroyd Ridgway of Bedford Works, Stoke on Trent and Robert Starey of Billiter Streety inb City of London. Her estate was valued at £5492 15s 10d.8
