     Robert White was born about 1855 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.1,2 He was the son of Robert White and Abigail Wright.1 He married Frances A ...2 Robert was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 46 Castle Road, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England, Robert was living on his own means. He had his wife Frances and their children Irene aged 20 born in South Africa, Vivian R aged 17 a bank clerk born in Alburne Sussex, as was Claude V a scholar aged 16. Eric M aged 9 a scholar and Olive M aged 5 were both born in Bedford. I believe their other children Jessie age 22 and Linda aged 18 were staying with their Aunt Abigail in Brighton.3

     Jessie White was born about 1851 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.2 She was the daughter of Robert White and Abigail Wright.1 Robert made his fortune, he and Abigail brought the family back to the UK in 1883.1 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 26 Marine Parade, Brighton, Sussex, England, she was listed as the daughter of Robert White.3

     Frances A ... was born about 1861 in Cape Town, South Africa.      Thomas Pierse was born about 1791 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England.2 He married Jane ...2 Thomas was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Quaker Lane, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, Thomas was a trainer.3 Thomas was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Quaker Lane, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, Thomas was listed as a trainer living with his daughter Isabella.4 Thomas was decribed as a trainer in 1860 on the marriage certificate of his daughter, Isabella to William Felburn Greathead.1

     Mary Orton was born about 1808 in Hutton Rudby, Yorkshire, England.1 She was the daughter of William Orton and Elizabeth Dodsworth.1 She was baptised on 2 October 1808 in Hutton Rudby, Yorkshire, England, her father was a butcher.1 She married William Brown on 15 August 1831 in St Thomas, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, each signed with a cross.1 Mary was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Temperence Street, Shildon, Durham, England, Mary's husband was lodging the night in Buckinghamshire. Her sisters husband John Greathead was also staying with the same family. Mary stayed home with the children. She had a lodger George Dixon staying with her and the family. He was listed as a stoker.2 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Adelaide Street, Shildon, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of William Brown.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Companys Row, Shildon, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of William Brown.4 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 6 Companys Cottages, Shildon, Durham, England, William was a labourer in works living with his wife Mary.5 Her husband William died on 19 October 1885 in Company Cottages, Shildon, Durham, England, He was described as an engine driver on his death certificate. The informant was John Dunning his son in law.1,6 Mary died in 1894 in Moor House Farm, Newbiggin Lane, Darlington, Durham, England.7,1

William Brown1

     William Brown was born in 1803 in East Hartburn, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1 He married Mary Orton, daughter of William Orton and Elizabeth Dodsworth, on 15 August 1831 in St Thomas, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, each signed with a cross.1 John Greathead and William Brown (the husband of John's wife's sister) were both employed by the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In July 1837, they were paid £35 13s 5d,and £39 2s 5d, respectively a month which was to include fireman's wage, and coal and water for the engine. John drove the Shildon engine.2 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 396 Bury Street, Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England, he was listed as the lodger of an unknown person William was an engine driver, he was married and lodging with William Reece and his family. William Reece was an engine fitter. Lodging also with the family was John Greathead another engine driver who was William's brother in law. Their wives were sisters. Mary was at home with their children.3 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in Adelaide Street, Shildon, Durham, England, William was a locomotive inspector.4 William was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Companys Row, Shildon, Durham, England, Wlliam was an engine driver. Their son and his family lived next door.5 William was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 6 Companys Cottages, Shildon, Durham, England, William was a labourer in works living with his wife Mary.6 William died on 19 October 1885 in Company Cottages, Shildon, Durham, England, He was described as an engine driver on his death certificate.      Elizabeth Sarah Beddows was born about 1834 in Islington, London, England.1 She married Charles Basil Wake, son of Charles Thompson Wake and Mary ..., in 1853 in Clerkenwell, London, England.2 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 67 St James Road, Islington, London, England, she was listed as the wife of Charles Basil Wake.3 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 74 St James Road, Islington, London, England, she was listed as the wife of Charles Basil Wake Charles was a commercial clerk. The family had taken in a boarder Eliza Child aged 71 a widow and annuitant who was born in Islington. Interestingly Charles's wife was described as being born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 204 St James Road, Islington, London, England, she was listed as the wife of Charles Basil Wake.5 Her husband Charles died on 1885 in Islington, London, England.6 Elizabeth was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in 18 Rugby Place, Brighton, Sussex, England, Elizabeth was gaining a small income from letting apartments.7 Elizabeth was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 24 Rugby Place, Brighton, Sussex, England, Elizabeth and her daughter have taken in a boarder, Henry Peckham.8
