George was an underground miner.3,4 He was the son of George Greathead and Mary Ann Moses. In the census of 3 April 1881 in 3 Campbell St West, Wolsingham, Weardale, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in No 2 Hedley Hope Terrace, Hedley, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead George was a scholar.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in New Pavillion Terrace, Lanchester, Durham, England, he was listed as the boarder staying with William Smith and his family. He worked as a coalminers hewer.7 He married Gertrude Alice Pull, daughter of John Thomas Pull and Mary Ann Cory, on 18 April 1903 in St Patricks Parish Church, Winlaton, Gateshead, Durham, England, afer the banns were read. The ceremony was witnessed by Matthew Pull and Miriam Pull. George was a miner aged 25 and Alice aged 23. Both of them gave their address as High Spen.8 George was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 94 Queen Street, Grange Villa, Chester le Street, Durham, England, George was a coke drawer living with his wife and children in their four roomed home. The household also contained Gertrude's brother Ernest and a boarder Joseph Sheardon.9 George was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 4 Stoney Lane, Beamish, Urpeth, Durham, England, George was living with his wife and children, he was a cook drawer for Jas Joicey & Co Ltd, at Cook Yard, Handon Hald Colliery, he was on strike at the time.10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register George was listed as living at 63 West Street, Chester le Street, Durham, England, with his wife Gertrude. And presumably three of their children (still closed records.)11 His wife Gertrude died on 1945 in Durham, England.12,13 George died in 1949 in Durham, England.14,12

George Greathead was born in 1846 in Leyburn, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He was the son of George Greathead and Ann Stott. In the census of 30 March 1851 at Melmerby, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of George Greathead.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Gammersgill, Carlton Highdale, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the grand son of John Stott.4 George and Robert emigrated on 4 March 1863 from Yorkshire, England, to Australia on "Golden City" at the invitation their Uncle Robert Greathead. This ship part of the Black Bull line was renamed the Golden City in 1861, she was built in 1851 and named The Challenger. The ship sailed from London on 30 November, stopping off on 10 December in Queenstown, Cork in Ireland to take on a further 237 emigrants. The Golden City arrived in Moreton Bay on 4 March 1863
Robert and Mr Gladwell were responsible for establishing the first timber mill in Maryborough (about 100km South of Bundaburg, Queensland) This became known as the Union Mill. Soon after they moved there and were pioneers in the sugar industry. Their farm was called "Penhillvate" after George's family home/village, Penhill in Yorkshire.2,5,6 He married Anne O'Hagan, daughter of John O'Hagan and Mary Ann Gallagher, on 6 April 1869 in Maryborough Catholic Church, Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, by Father Paul Tissot a Frenchman. The ceremony was witnessed by George Ward and Mary Ann O'Hagan. Mary left her mark.
The family became pioneers of the sugar cane industry in the Woongarra district. George was one of the members of the first Barolin Divisional Board and was their chairman between 1883 - 1885. Through his interest in education he donated the land on which the original Woongarra State School was built.2,7,8,9,10 George died on 9 September 1887 in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, Sadly he commited suicide shooting himself in the banana fields, over worry about the mill he had bought.7,11,12,13 George was buried on 10 September 1887 in Bundaberg Cemetery, Fitzgerald Street, Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia, in a private grave number P89 location C4. His wife was buried in the same grave with him in 1918. The service was held in a Wesleyan Church and the Minister was Rev Pearson. The funeral director was Timothy Buckley. His address was given as Penhillvale.14,15,16
