     Henry Barton was born in 1884 in Wigan, Lancashire, England.1,2 He married Sarah Fowler on 28 September 1910 in Pemberton, Lancashire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Abel Barton and Mary Elizabeth Widdows. Henry was a blacksmith living at 29 Holland Moon Gardens, Upholland and his father Thomas Barton was a tanner. Sarah was a housemaid living at 3 Enfield Street, Pemberton, her father Richard Fowler was a collier.1,3,4 Henry died in 1946 in Hemsworth, Yorkshire, England.1,5

John Edward Greathead
     John Edward Greathead was born on 27 October 1856 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.5,2,3,6,4,7 He was the son of John Greathead and Ann Morley. He was baptised on 8 February 1857 in St Peter and St Paul Cathedral Church, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.8 John a shoemaker from Hawksworth Yard High Street opened a bank account with the Sheffield and Hallam Bank in Sheffield also in the High Street for little John his son, aged 2 on Monday 9 May 1859.9 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 14 Hanksworth Road, High Street, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of John Greathead John was a scholar.10 In the census of 2 April 1871 in High Street, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the grandson of John Morley John was a joiners apprentice.11 He married Eliza Hancock, daughter of William Hancock and Hannah Biggins, on 20 August 1878 in St John the Baptist, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Charles and Elizabeth Law, John's sister and brother in law. John was a joiner and his father a shoe maker. Both John and Eliza gave their address as Dobie Street.3,12,13 John was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 1 Ashfield View, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, John was a joiner.14 John was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in 2 Ashfield View, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, John was a joiner and builder.15 John claimed damages from Thomas Twilby a mason and his neighbour in Conisbrough for the boundary wall falling because Thomas had placed earth against the wall. The verdict was for the plaintiff and Thomas had to pay 30s.16 On 1 January 1895 John Greathead a joiner from Conisbrough, Walter Smith a chemist from Doncaster, William Mellers a miner from Mexbro, James Barlow a labourer from Denaby, Tom Steas a miner from Mexbro and J Mitchel a JP from Bolton Hall were each fined £1 including costs at S Doncaster for being in breach of a muzzling order.17 John was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 237 Park Road, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, John was a joiner and carpenter.5
John died on 22 February 1910 in 41 Park Road, Conisbrough, Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, aged 53.3,6,4,18,19,2 The will of John was proved on 15 March 1910 in Wakefield to his widow Eliza. His effects were valued at £311 8s 2d.19

     Thomas Greathead was baptised in 1770 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.3,4,5,6 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Martha Cooper. He was baptised on 11 October 1770 in St Swithins, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.7 Thomas' father was away in America in the army for eight years. Thomas joined his father in the drapery trade, putting £20 into stock Drapery business on Isle of Sheppey, Kent. It later burnt down.3,2,8 He married Susanna Milner, daughter of John Milner and Mary Lindley, on 12 January 1794 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, after taking out a marriage bond the 10th January.1,2,3,9 It is recorded in the Excise minute books that Thomas Greathead, Officer of Thirsk 1st Ride and John Dawson, Officer of Helmsley Ride Whitby Collection exchange Stations on 27 September 1823.10 His wife Susanna died on 1825 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire, England.11 He married Catherine Thornton on 20 January 1833 in St Mary the Virgin, Dover, Kent, England.5,12 Thomas was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Chapel Place, Dover, Kent, England, Both Catherine and Thomas were of independent means. They appear to have a Catherine Thornton aged 4 with them who was born in the County of Kent.13 His wife Catherine died on 1847 in Dover, Kent, England.14 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Brook Street, Charlton, Kent, England, he was listed as the visitor of Thomas and Harriet Wilkins. He is listed as a retired linen draper.15 Thomas died in 1854 in Dover, Kent, England.16

     Joseph James Greathead was born on 21 April 1798 in Sheppey, Sheerness, Kent, England.1,2,5,6 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Susanna Milner. He was an apprentice to a Chemist 1813-16 in 1813.2 He married Sarah Dunstall, daughter of Joseph James Dunstall and Lucy Foreman, on 9 March 1821 in Gillingham, Kent, England.1,5 On the baptism record of his daughter Lucy in 1822 he was described as a tailor.7 And again he was described as a tailor in 1824 on the baptismal record of his son Joseph.7 Left Yorkshire for Sheerness in 1827.2 Joseph appears in the Rochester Poll book for 1830 as a tailor.8 He was an army and navy tailor in 1834.2 Joseph was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in High Street, Blue Town, Sheerness, Kent, England, Joseph was a draper living with his wife and family, little Eliza was jsut 6 months old.5,9 Joseph appeared in the London Gazette Issue 19991, published on 22 June 1841 page 31 under Insolvent Debtor-Dividend number 46,694C. Creditors of Joseph late of High Street, Blue Town, Sheerness in Kent an army and navy tailor, were informed that the dividend of two shillings and ten pence halfpenny in the pound may be received, by applyng to Mr G Murton of Faversham in Kent, draper, one of the assignees, on or after the 28th instant. Bills and securities to be produced.10 Joseph was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Lower Britton Street, Gillingham, Kent, England, Joseph was a druggist and living with his wife and children, however his wife was staying with their son William on the night of the census as his wife had just given birth to their first child William.11 Joseph and Sarah emigrated with their four youngest children, Alfred, Emma, Eliza and Edward leaving the London Docks on 12 April 1853 and arriving on 6 August 1853 in Australia on "Diana." Joseph acted as the ships doctor, he was a chemist, and also a Methodist minister. Joseph produced a handwritten diary of the journey from Shadwell Basin, off the Thames to Australia.2,12,13 He was working with the City Mission in Melbourne from 2 October 1854 to 29 June 1856 when he was sent to Sydney. He lived in Victoria for 72 years.
on 2 October 1854.2,1 Joseph opened a Chemist shop in Hoddle Street, East Collingwood, a suburb of Melbourne. He was also one of the preachers for the City mission and wrote a detailed journal of his works in the community in early Melbourne for two years. The journal was donated to the La Trobe Library.2,12,13 Their son Charles having lost his wife emigrated to Australia to join them. Sadly he seems to have left his three daughters behind to go into the workhouse.14,2 Joseph died on 1 December 1877 in Collingwood, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, aged 79 from Typhoid fever.1,2,15,12,16 Joseph was buried on 3 December 1877 in Melbourne General Cemetery, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.2,17 The will of Joseph was proved on 7 February 1878 to Sarah Greathead his widow, in Melbourne, his effects were valued at £277 10/-. Joseph was described as a druggist. The will was drawn up on 26 November 1877.18,19

He married Margaret Ruby A Reid, daughter of Joseph Reid and Catherine Glen, on 6 September 1864 in Wesleyan Chapel, Dowling Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1,2,3,10,6 He died on 16 July 1911 in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Victoria, Australia, aged 69 from Myocardites. The informant was his son Joseph 29 Collins Street, Annandale, New South Wales. He had been in Australia for 60 years.2,11,12,13 Edward was buried on 18 July 1911 in C of E Necropolis, Rookwood, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1,2

     In the census of 7 June 1841 in George Street, Sunderland, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Margaret Markwell.3 She was born on 2 June 1845 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.4,2 She was the daughter of Joseph Reid and Catherine Glen. She married Edward Greathead, son of Joseph James Greathead and Sarah Dunstall, on 6 September 1864 in Wesleyan Chapel, Dowling Street, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1,4,5,6,2 Her husband Edward died on 16 July 1911 in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Victoria, Australia, aged 69 from Myocardites. The informant was his son Joseph 29 Collins Street, Annandale, New South Wales. He had been in Australia for 60 years.4,7,8,9 Margaret died on 27 July 1914 aged 69.4 Margaret was buried in Rookwood, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.1

Chart 9 - William Greathead
     Thomas Greathead was born about 1730.4,5 He was the son of William Greathead and Ann Johnson. He married Martha Cooper on 2 March 1761 in St Helen, Norwich, Norfolk, England, after the banns had been read on 15 February, 23 February and 1 March. The ceremony was witnessed by Thomas Pess and Stephen Stangroome.2,6,7,8,9,10 He was a draper in Sheerness, Kent. By 1794 Thomas and Martha had moved to Isle of Sheppy.11 Thomas left a will on 21 June 1797 His son Thomas was a Silk Merchant in Barnstaple, North Devon Thomas left £30 to his wife Martha "to be in the trade until she pleases to take it out;" also all household furniture for her use while she continued to live with his sons "where they were not permitted to live. If she desired to leave them then she may have her bed and what else she may want to furnish her room and 8/- per week for maintenance out of the trade; but not the £30 mentioned but 30/- per quarter for rent from my sons Thomas and William who then may occupy the business they are now in" He also left £30 to his daughter Martha Holding; to son James Greathead he left the goods he bought to Messrs. Hatgood, Worth and Read on 5 April 1796 costing £27-19-0, "this should be made up to him including what he owes for goods and money borrowed and board to £50." To his son Samuel he left £20 in trust of Mr Macaulay at 15 Norton Falgate, London, at lawful interest until he be 21 years when he would have both the principal and interest; Samuel also received £10 per annum for "Cloaths". The business was left to his sons Thomas and William on such conditions as is necessary both mutually agreeing in buying and selling the goods to be in partnership; Thomas was charged with carrying out the wishes of his father. Signed by Thos Greathead. Witnessed Wm Mears and Ja Johnson. Executors appointed: Mr Edward Brittain and Peter Burton jointly, both of Chatham, Kent.1,12 Thomas died about 1798.4 The will of Thomas was proved on 17 March 1798.12

He married Sarah ... about 1810.2 The Poor Law book for Bethnal Green on 28 October 1839 recorded that James Greathead and his wife Sarah of New Road, have their removal order from Chatham be suspended.4
