The funeral of Master Algar Stephen Hogg, only son of Councillor F S Hogg whose sudden death at the early age of 16 has already been referred to the "Guardian" took place at the West Hartlepool Cemetery this afternoon. The cortege left Mr Hogg's residence at Eldon Grove, and proceeded to the Congregational Church, where a short service was conducted by Rev W Heath, who performed the last rites at the graveside. The following relatives ............ and friends were present and many handsome floral tributes were received amongst them being one from Sir Christopher and Lady Furness.5

     Sarah Bainbridge was born in 1846 in Sherburn, Durham, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Robert Bainbridge.3 She married Isaac Ditchburn, son of William Ditchburn and Jane Greathead, on 10 December 1864 in Register Office, Durham, England, Robert Bainbridge and Thomas Sarsfield witnessed the marriage. Both Isaac and Sarah gave their addresses as Brandon. Isaac was described as a caol miner and signed the register with a X.4,5 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Sunniside, Crook, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of Isaac Ditchburn.6 Her husband Isaac died on 8 September 1880 in Seaham Colliery, Easington, Durham, England, in the Seaham Colliery Disaster. Upwards of 160 lives were lost in the explosion which occurred about 2.20 a.m.7,4 Sarah was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 18 Mt Pleasant, Seaham, Durham, England, Sarah is listed as an annuitant, her husband having died in the mine disaster the September before.8

One person told me his spine was burnt at birth by a nurse using a hot water bottle, another told me he was an 'instrument baby'. Even with this disability he wrote radio dramas for the South African Boadcasting Corporation. He taught himself to walk and was an avid reader of books.1,2
