Cuthbert Emerson1

     Cuthbert Emerson was born in 1821 in St John's Chapel, Weardale, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of Jonathan C Emerson and Sarah Hopper.3 Cuthbert served his apprenticeship with Dr Smith of Seaham harbour. Upon completion at the age of 19 he set up bsiness as a Chemist and Druggist in Hartlepool in partnership with Mr Chapman. Six years later they opened another branch opposite the old branch station at West Hartlepool. Shortly after that Mr Chapman took possession of the Hartlepool shop and Cuthbert the West Hartlepool one. Cuthbert moved from the old position in Mainsforth Terrace to 3 Church Ctreet and later 8 Church Street where he successfully completed business for 35 years.4 He married Isabella Brown, daughter of Peter Brown and Isabella Baker, on 16 April 1843 in Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.5,6 Cuthbert was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Stripes, Hartlepool, Durham, England, Cuthbert was a master Chemist and Druggist, he was living with his wife and children.7 Cuthbert was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in Garden House, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, Cuthbert was a Chemist and Druggist. His son John is apprenticed to him.8 Cuthbert was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Fountain Terrace, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, Cuthbert is still described as a druggist. It appears that his son John who was apprenticed to him in the last census was joined by his brother Isaac. Both of their apprenticeships seem to have been completed as they were described as assistants to their father. William was apprenticed to a watchmaker but still living at home.9 Cuthbert was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in Montague House, Fountain Terrace, Hartlepool, Durham, England, Cuthbert was described as a Chemist and Druggist. He had two grandchildren living with him Walter Pyman son of his daughter Sarah and Sarah aged 12. I am unsure whose daughter she was.10 Cuthbert died on 8 February 1888 in Montague House, Fountain Terrace, Hartlepool, Durham, England, from an enlargement of the glands of the liver. He also suffered from Jaundice, caused by a former ailment. He finally took to his bed about three weeks before his death falling into unconciousness three days befoore his death and finally passing away quietly in his sleep.1,11,12 The will of Cuthbert was proved on 29 March 1888 at the Principal Registry by Isabella his wife of Montague House, West Hartlepool. Frederick, a joiner of Montague House and George Emerson, a solicitor of Church Street Birmingham his sons were the executors. His personal estate was valued at £683 15s 0d.12

     Sarah Emma Emerson was born in 1852 in Hartlepool, Durham, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Cuthbert Emerson and Isabella Brown.1 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Garden House, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Cuthbert Emerson Sarah was a scholar.3 She married John William Pyman in 1875 in Hartlepool, Durham, England, John was a ship broker and coal merchant.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 8 Kymin Terrace, Pengarth, Glamorganshire, Wales, she was listed as the wife of John William Pyman.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in Brierley, Park Road, Penarth, Glamorganshire, Wales, she was listed as the wife of John William Pyman.6 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Goytre House, Goytre, Monmouthshire, Wales, she was listed as the wife of John William Pyman.7 Sarah was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Glasira Lais Road, Porthcawl, Newton Nottage, Glamorganshire, Wales, Sarah was listed as head of this household, her husband John was living in Penarth with their sons Bertram and Jack.8 Her husband John died on 1929 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales.9 Sarah left a will on 11 February 1930 her solicitor J T Robinson and her parlourmaid Gertrude E Arthur witnessed the will.

After the distressing bankruptcy case and subsequent discovery misuse and conversion of clients funds on 10 counts by her solicitor brother George when on 17 March 1930 he was sentenced to four years' penal servitude she wrote a codicil to her will cutting him out completely revoking his bequest and giving it to his wife, her sister in law. She also added some bequests to her late parlourmaid, cook and chauffeur. Her solictor witnessed this codicil as did D P Biggs a schoolmaster on 3 October 193.10 Sarah died on 30 March 1934 in Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales.11,10

     George Emerson was born on 2 November 1863 in Hartlepool, Durham, England, George was the twin of Albert.1,2,3 He was the son of Cuthbert Emerson and Isabella Brown.1 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Fountain Terrace, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Cuthbert Emerson George was a scholar.4 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Montague House, Fountain Terrace, Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Cuthbert Emerson George is described as an undergraduate of London L of D.5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 17 Westminster Road, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, he was listed as the lodger of Sarah Buckley a widow aged 47 and her daughter Eliza aged 18. George is described as a Solicitor.6 He married Frances Sophia Shotter in 1892 in Aston, Warwickshire, England.1,7 George was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 81 Hall Road, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, George was a solicitor living with his wife and family. Young Philip was only three months old. At the time he was living in The Bungalow, Walford Bridge, Cleobury Mortimer. George had been declared a bankrupt back in December. He had attempted to use clients money to save himself.10 His wife Frances died on 1953 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.11 George died in 1954 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.12

     Francis Stephen Hogg was born in 1858 in Leyburn, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He married Louisa Elizabeth Emerson, daughter of Cuthbert Emerson and Isabella Brown, in 1884 in Hartlepool, Durham, England.3 Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in Cairnsmore, Eldon Grove, Hartlepool, Durham, England, Francis was a builder. His mother in law and brothers in law are boarding with him and his family.4 He attended the burial of Algar Stephen Hogg in 1901 in West Hartlepool Cemetery, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.5 Francis was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in Eldon Grove, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, Francis was a joiner and house builder living with his wife, two brothers in law, Frederick Emerson also a joiner and house builder and Francis Emerson a ship broker clerk. They had one servant and three boarders all living in their 12 roomed home built by the Hogg building Company. One of thwe boarders was called Abraham Prinsky.
