Stephen Hide
     Stephen Hide was born in 1896 in Hexthorpe, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He was the son of Edmund Hide and Kate Greathead. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 198 Bentley Road, Bentley, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Edmund Hide Edmund was now a railway signalman.3 Her gravestone in Arksey Old Cemetery near Doncaster read: Kate, the beloved wife of Edmund Hide of Bentley, died 7 September 1905 aged 42 years. He giveth beloved sleep. Kate's father in law Edmund who died 9 December 1918 aged 87 and her son Stephen were also buried in the same grave.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 58 Cooke Street, Bentley, Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Edmund Hide Stephen was a plumber's apprentice.5 Stephen enlisted in Pontefract on 15 January 1915 giving his address as 58 Cook Street, Bentley, Doncaster and his ocupation as a screener. He was 19 years of age and 5 foot ten inches tall, his chest measurement was 36 inches and his weight 181 lbs. He was discharged 55 days later on 8 March 1915 being found unfit for further service.6 On 20 June 1917 Stephen signed on again in Ripon as Gunner in the RGA Regiment Number 167420 and discharged on 31 December 1918.6 He married Rose Edna Cartlidge in 1928 in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England.7,8 Service in the Royal Garrison Artillery in France and elsewhere during WW1 ruined his health Stephen Hide died in September 1940 committing suicide by being hit by an LNER express train, not far from Arksey Cemetery.9,8
