Thomas Greathead was baptised on 20 June 1734 in Marrick, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of Francis Greathead.1 Thomas was trained in 1754 in Ulverstone to be an Exciseman. He was then appointed supernumerary in Sheffield Collection. In 1757 he was transferred to Worksop. On 6 October 1758 he failed to minute a recurring problem and keep accurate records. He was twice repremanded and once admonished within three years. It was then ordered that he be discharged from the service.2 He married Rebeccah Sidgwick on 18 November 1762 in Hipswell, Yorkshire, England, after the banns were read on 24 October, 7 and 14 November. The ceremony was witnessed by John Cansick and William Finbee.1,3,4 Thomas died on 7 January 1809 in Marrick, Yorkshire, England, aged 74.1 Thomas was buried on 7 January 1809 in St Andrew, Marrick, Yorkshire, England.5,1

He married Ruth Ellerton, daughter of Richard Ellerton and Sarah ..., in 1735 in Downholme, Yorkshire, England.1,2 Matthew left a will on 30 January 1765 saying he was being frail in body but of sound & perfect mind & memory. His two sons Christopher and Matthew were appointed Executors and his daughter Sarah and Ruth his wife was left bequests.1 Matthew died in 1769 in Yorkshire, England.1 Matthew was buried on 19 April 1769 in Downholme, Yorkshire, England.1 The will of Matthew was proved on 29 April 1769 Matthew was described as a Yeoman, late of Ellerton in the Parish of Downholme.1

The ceremony was witnessed by Sarah Whitelock and John Hagston.2 Elizabeth died on 13 July 1788 in Downholme, Yorkshire, England, aged 52.1 Elizabeth was buried on 15 July 1788 in St Michael and All Angels, Downholme, Yorkshire, England, Christopher and Elizabeth were buried together their gravestone states Christopher was of Ellerton Abbey. Matthew Whitelock Bell was born about 1848 in Ravensworth, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of James Bell and Ann Whitelock.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Ravensworth, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the nephew of Elizabeth Greathead.2 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Gilling, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Ann Bell He was a scholar.3 George, a brewers agent of 32 Percy Gardens, Tynemouth together with his brother Matthew of High Street, Wandsworth a Chemist and Druggust and their Uncle Matthew Whitelock of Cogden Hall described as a Gentleman were the executors of their Aunt Elizabeth Greathead née Whitelock's will which was proved in York on 10 December 1880.4

Arthur only used two forenames during his lifetime. These were Arthur Whitelock. It was not until his birth certificate was bought when the third name was discovered. The name Edward was included after one of his uncles Edward John McGlead who was born in North Melbourne in 1859. He was the younger brother of Mary Ann McGlead, Thomas Nepean Gray's wife.1 Arthur Edward Whitelock Gray was born on 22 May 1886 in Port Albert, Victoria, Australia.1 He was the son of Thomas Greathead and Mary Ann McGlead.1 He married Ida Evelyn Orr, daughter of Stannis Andrew Orr, on 8 May 1915 in Australia.1 Arthur died on 6 August 1969 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, aged 83.1
