Thomas Hawley1
#16718, b. 1750, d. 20 March 1808

The brother Thomas and William Hawley were the first Hawley potters in Rawmash.1 Thomas Hawley was born in 1750 Thomas's parents were possibly William and Ellen.1 He married Ann Nailor on 21 August 1774 in Parish Church, Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, England. By 1783 Thomas was working the Kilnhurst Old Pottery. There is an earthenware bust of John Wesley in Rotherham Museum which has 'Thom. Hawley' impressed underneath. The pottery was situated on the western side of the canal at Kilnhurst, the site is now covered by colliery baths. It was reputed to be one of the oldest factory potteries in the area and was probably established in 1746 by a potter called William Malpass. Malpass had wide business interests in the area, but he worked the Kilnhurst pottery until he sold it to Thomas Hawley in 1783. The pottery had easy access for loading its finished wares on to waiting barges at the canal side. A single track railway from Warren Vale Colliery gave the pottery a constant supply of coal. Land Tax assessments in 1783 record the occupiers at Kilnhurst Pottery as 'Turner & Co.'. William Turner, a gentleman of Kilnhurst, probably had a financial interest in the pottery.1 Thomas sold the Kilnhurst Old Pottery to his brother William, but he continued to work there. Excavations at Kilnhurst reveal the manufacture of creamware and pearlware about this period. Creamware was made by most English potters from the 1770s onwards. It was often quite plain having only an enamelled border design. It was popular because of its clean appearance, closely rivalling the more expensive porcelain. Pearlware is a variation on creamware but whiter in hue due to the use of a covering glaze slightly tinted with blue. It is mainly tableware. At Kilnhurst Pottery the creamware and pearlware had both decorated underglaze and later were transfer printed, all being of good quality. The creamware had a heavy body with a pale green coloured glaze, some having ribbed handles with crude leaf terminals. Underglaze painting in blue, black, green and orange was found in attractive floral motifs, often combined with a plain line border. Pearlware was found having a rich blue glaze, with some pieces showing crazing.1 Thomas died on 20 March 1808 in Rawmarsh, Yorkshire, England.1
