     Mary Baillie was born in 1830 in Scotland.1 She was the daughter of John Baillie and Mary Paxton. She married Joseph Strafford, son of Isaac Backhouse Strafford and Elizabeth Furnace, on 14 August 1856 in East Adam Street, Edinburgh, Midloathian, Scotland, after Banns were read. Mary gave her address as 112 High Street, Portobello. In the census of 7 April 1861 in 8 Division Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the wife of Joseph Strafford.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 90 Raglan Street, Eccleston, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Joseph Strafford.3 Mary died before 9 December 1873.4

     John Edward Greathead was born on 4 July 1911 in Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Oliver Greathead and Clare Elsie Booth. In the census of 19 June 1921 in Castleton, Derbyshire, England, he was listed as the visitor Oliver, his wife and their two children were visiting Robert and Gertrude Nicholson. Oliver was a trade joiner and builder for his mother - Eliza Greathead joinery at 41 Park Road, Conniborough. Kathleen was referred to as Molly.5 He married Florence Barton, daughter of Henry Barton and Sarah Fowler, on 25 April 1935 in Hemsworth, Yorkshire, England, Hemsworth Jun 1935 9C-473.6,2,7 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at 2 Holywell Lane, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, with his wife Florence. And their son John. John was a carpenter and undertaker.8 He was working for his father and Uncle John Edwin and later carried on business as joiner and Funeral Director of Greathead Brothers. Thio slater became J E Greathead and Son Funeral Directors.1,9 John died on 23 July 1976 in 20 Church Street, Conisbrough, Yorkshire, England, aged 65.6,2,10,11 The will of John was proved on 12 September 1977 in Sheffield. His effects were valued at £2,909.11

Chart 1 My Direct Family - Edward Greathead
     Edward Greathead was born on 27 January 1899 in 13 Gainford Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England.1,2,3 He was the son of Peter Greathead and Eliza Maughan. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 13 Gainsford Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Peter Greathead.4 Edward started school at West Hartlepool school for boys on 18 April 1904. The family were living in 13 Gainford Street. He appears again on the register of 1 July 1907 and left 21 January 1912 being too old.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 13 Gainsford Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Peter Greathead Edward was at school.6 Edward of 56 Clarendon Road, West Hartlepool aged 18 years 2 months on 3 April 1917 and described as a labourer signed up in Sunderland into the West Yorkshire Regiment. His regimental number was 51320.7 He was a docker. In the census of 19 June 1921 in 20 Exeter Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Eliza Greathead Edward like his brother Thomas was a ship yard labourer working at Grays ship builders but was out of work.8 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Edward was listed as living at 20 Exeter Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, with his brother Thomas Edward was working as a stevedore.3 He died on 31 October 1966 in General Hospital, Hartlepool, Durham, England, aged 67 from Acute Bronchitis, wasting, cerebral thrombosis, generalised arteris sclertios. A post mortem without inquest took place and his death was certified by N Graham the Coroner for Stockton Ward of Durham County. E Smith his sister registered his death.9
