When his affairs were wound up there were found to be some serious discrepancies. The article went on to explain the reasons why Charles was arrested.

An article in Gloucester Citizen on 27 June 1900 suggested that the amount of the fraud was said to be £28,000

A further article in the Times of Friday 3 August 1900 stated that Charles, had in the previous June been convicted at the Hertford Assizes of misappropriating, as a trustee, sums of £300 and £400 of misappropriating a sum of £800 entrusted to him as a solicitor with written directions as to its disposal. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour and struck off the rolls as a solicitor. There was some consideration that he may have had a penal sentence. He had previously been a pillar of society and a member of the masonic lodge.

The news spread fast and the details were reported in a great many newspapers all over the country.14,15,3 Charles was listed inmate on the census of 31 March 1901 in HM Prison, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, his wife was staying with her sister in law Elizabeth Bullock in Budleigh Salterton in Devon.16 Charles died on 6 July 1905 in Workhouse, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England, aged 58.17,18,3

Herbert Bullock1

#15558, b. 29 April 1853, d. 9 April 1925
Last Edited=9 May 2016
Herbert Bullock was born on 29 April 1853 in Clapham, London, England.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Joseph Billingsley Bullock and Elizabeth Lawrence.1 He was baptised on 2 February 1854 in St John the Evangelist, Lambeth, London, England, his father was a solicitor and the family lived in Broxbourne House, Lark Hale Rise.4 In the census of 7 April 1861 in High Street, Great Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, he was listed as the son of Joseph Billingsley Bullock Herbert was a scholar.6 In the census of 2 April 1871 in High Street, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, he was listed as the son of Elizabeth Bullock Herbert was an articled clerk to a solicitor.7 He married Elizabeth Hanna Anderson on 19 April 1882 in St Michael and All Angels, Ladbrook Grove, Kensington, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by James Frances Wallace and Charles Bullock. Herbert was a solicitor from the parish of Sullary in Rochdale. Elizabeth was listed as from St Michael Parish and her father Henry Hanna Anderson was a deceased linen merchant.1,8,9 Herbert was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in 7 Kingswood Villas, Station Road, Gillingham, Kent, England, Herbert was a solicitor living with his wife and adopted daughter Vera L Bullock.10 Vereker's father was Charles Henry Lloyd and her mother was Louisa Jane Lloyd née Jackson. Her father was described as Landowner. Charles Lloyd was born in 1821 and died in 1887. Louisa was born about 1851 and died in 1932. She was Charles' 3rd wife and bore him 7 children of whom Vereker was the seventh. After Louisa was widowed in 1887 the family moved to Northumberland where the Aunts on her mother's side, the Errintons, provided a house for her and helped her a great deal. Vereker was brought up by a friend of the family, Mrs Elizabeth Bullock and did not see her brothers again until she was 16.11
In the census of 31 March 1901 in 45 Marleborough Road, Gillingham, Kent, England, he was listed as boarding with a married lady whose name looks like Mary Guernay. His wife is living with his adopted daughter and sister in law. His brother Charles who had been struck off as a solicitor is in St Albans prison, serving a twelve month sentence with hard labour for misappropriating funds. Herbert seemed to be still practicing law as a solicitor in Gillingham. I am sure this is the correct entry but strangely Herberts place of birth has been enumerated as Demerara! I would suggest that as the Head of the household is missing and only his wife and a servant were enumerated alongside Herbert there was some misunderstanding. Herbert's mother was born in Demerara and I guess this had been remembered from conversations with her boarder Herbert, he would not have completed the return.12 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 5 Stopford Road, Gillingham, Kent, England, he was listed as a boarder and a solicitor. He is listed as married living in a two roomed home. His wife and adopted daughter were back in Devon.13 Herbert died on 9 April 1925 in 5 Stopford Road, Gillingham, Kent, England, aged 71.14,3,15 Herbert was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, in Plot 158.3,5 The will of Herbert was proved on 15 June 1925 in London to Walter William Turner Barnett Secretary Gillingham Co-operative Society and Lancelot Claude Bullock solicitor, his nephew and son of brother Charles. His effects were valued at £1816 11s 8d.15
