     Samuel Lamb was baptised on 14 March 1824 in All Saints, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.2,3 He was the son of Nicholas Lamb and Elizabeth Spurr. Samuel was listed on the census of 7 June 1841 in Hartlepool, Durham, England, as a butcher living with George Patterson a 60 year old butcherand William Hudson a 14 year old butcher.4 He married Eleanor Newcomb in 1845 in Auckland, Durham, England.5,6 Samuel was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Thickley Place, East Tickley, Durham, England, Samuel was an engine driver living with his wife and children. Little Mary was only 11 months old.7 His wife Eleanor died on 1860 in Auckland, Durham, England.5,8 Samuel was listed as the head of the family on the census of 7 April 1861 in Main Street, East Thickley, Durham, England, Samuel was a railway engine driver living with his four children and a servant Jane Dove who later became Samuel's second wife.9 He married Jane Dove in 1862 in Auckland, Durham, England.5,10 Samuel was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Dixon Carr, Hammersley, Durham, England, Samuel was a butcher and farmer living with his wife, an apprentice called John Hunt aged 18 and a general servant.11 He died when he fell out of a cart in 1887 in Bishop Auckland, Durham, England.3,12

     Henry Lawrence Lamb was born on 3 February 1883 in 101 Thornton Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of Henry Lamb and Georgina Hart Hutchinson. He was baptised on 28 February 1883 in St James, Hartlepool, Durham, England. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 101 Thornton Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Lamb Henry was a scholar.3 When Ellen was born in 1891 she completed the family.4 He was a civil engineer and a wonderful botonist and historian. In the census of 31 March 1901 in 101 Thornton Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Henry Lamb Henry was a civil engineer.5 The family lived at 101 Thornton Street and later 46 Clifton Avenue. Henry married Ella Smyth, daughter of Tom Wilson Smyth and Margaret Collins Bainbridge, in 1913 in Lewisham, London, England.6,7,8 In the census of 19 June 1921 in Highfield, Linden Gardens, Leatherhead, Surrey, England, he was listed as the visitor of Tom Wilson Smyth Henry, Ella and their son Henry were visiting Ella's parents. Henry was a retired civil engineer.9 In 1922 Henry and Ella are listed on the electoral rolls as living at 25a Lee Park Lewisham.10 Harry spent his later years at The Rigg with his brother Norman and sister Ellen.11 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Henry was listed as living at Belmont Residential Boarding House 93-107 Highbury New Park 1-3 Stradbroke Road, Islington, London, England, he was a civil engineer and listed as visiting this boarding house.12 Henry died on 26 May 1942 in The Rigg, Arkengarthdale, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, aged 59 from Coma and malignant dis of jaw and cheek. His sister Ellen registered his death.13,14 His estate was probated on 26 October 1942 in Newcastle upon Tyne to his widow Ella. His efefcts were valued at £157 14s 6d. His usual address was 53 Swannington Street, Burton upon Trent.15

In the census of 7 April 1861 in 16 Anthony Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead Thomas was a scholar.2 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Leeds Infirmary, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as a patient Thomas worked as a Telegraph clerk.3 He died on 9 May 1871 in 16 Anthony Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, aged 18 his occupation was given as a Post Office Clerk.4

He was baptised on 11 August 1858 in Wesley Methodist Baptist Church, Durham, England, Peter was baptised with his brother William by J Roper.5,6 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 16 Anthony Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead Peter was a scholar.7 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 16 Anthony Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead Peter was a standing engine stocker.8 He married Eliza Maughan, daughter of George Maughan and Mary Smith, on 9 July 1878 in St Hilda's, Hartlepool, Durham, England, they were married after banns had been read by Edwin R Ormsby. The ceremony was witnessed by George Maughan, Eliza's father who signed with a X and Robert Faint. Peter was listed as a joiner and cartwright.14 Peter was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 13 Gainsford Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, Peter was a cartwright for the North Eastern Railway living with his wife and children in a four roomed house.15 In the Northern Daily Mail, West Hartlepool newspaper of 26 June 1916 an article which said: today, at the West Hartlepool police court, Peter Greathead aged 61 and a cartwright, was summoned by his wife Eliza Greathead who alleged persistent cruelty and he said she was drinking too much............ordered to pay ten shillings a week. She was given a separation order after 41 years of marriage.16 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 55 Northumberland Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the father of John Greathead Peter was a cartwright working for North Eastern Railway waggon works in West Hartlepool. His wife Eliza was back in the family home with other children.17 Peter died in 1924 in Hartlepool, Durham, England.18

     Eliza Maughan was born in 1855 in Sunderland, Durham, England.1,2 She was the daughter of George Maughan and Mary Smith. In the census of 7 April 1861 in 30 Albert Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of George Maughan.3,4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 26 Albert Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of George Maughan.5 She married Peter Greathead, son of William Greathead and Sarah Brown, on 9 July 1878 in St Hilda's, Hartlepool, Durham, England, they were married after banns had been read by Edwin R Ormsby. The ceremony was witnessed by George Maughan, Eliza's father who signed with a X and Robert Faint. Peter was aged 23 and Eliza was aged 20.6,7 It is assumed that Eliza could not write her name as she signed her mark X on certificates. She was baptised on 28 March 1878 in Weslyan Methodists Church, Musgrave Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England.4,5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in 16 Anthony Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the grandaughter of William Greathead.6 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 18 Fawcett Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Peter Greathead Sarah was a scholar.7 She married George Hawley, son of William Hawley and Elizabeth Grindler, on 16 January 1897 in Parish Church, Wingate, Durham, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Elizabeth and Nathaniel Farnsworth and Robert Simpson. George gave his occupation as a miner and his father was a hawker. She was baptised on 11 December 1890 in Weslyan Methodists Church, Musgrave Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England.4,5 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 18 Fawcett Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Peter Greathead.6 Mary died on 29 December 1896 in 12 Fawcett Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, aged 6 The Northern Daily Mail of West Hartlepool dated 4 January 1897 reported "Information has been conveyed to the West Hartlepool police of the death of May Greyhead (6), of 12 Fawcett Street. between two and three o'clock on Tuesday the child was left in the house by the mother for a few minutes. On the return of the mother she found the poor child burnt about the throat and face. Death has resulted from the injuries." This must be little Mary. The following day the paper reported "Mr Coroner Dodds held an inquest at the police station, West Hartlepool, touching on the death of Mary Greathead (6) reported in yesterday's 'mail'. The jury returned a verdict of 'death from burns accidently received'.7,4,8

     William Greathead was born about 1790 in Heighington, Darlington, Durham, England.1,2,3 He was the son of Paul Greathead and Ann Whitfield. He was baptised on 14 November 1790 in St Mary, Whorlton, Durham, England.4,5,6 He married Jane Cockfield on 27 April 1812 in St Mary, Staindrop, Teesdale, Durham, England, after the banns had been read in both the church where they married and St Mary Whorlton where William worshipped last read on 19 April. Staindrop is eight miles East from Heighington, four miles north of Whorlton.7,8,9,10,6 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 6 June 1841 in North Side, Bishop Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, he was a tailor living with his children. His wife was staying with their daughter Ann and her two children Ann and John. Little Ann may have been ill as she died later that year.11,12 His wife Jane died on 1842 in Darlington, Durham, England.13,14 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Houghton Bank, Heighington, Darlington, Durham, England, he was listed as a lodger with Thakery and Mary Gotesburg and their family. Thakery was a farmer of 17 acres.15,12 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Hope House, Heighington, Darlington, Durham, England, he was listed as the boarder of Elizabeth Sanderson, who was described as a widow and occupier of land. The enumeration sheet lists him as unmarried but since he did not fill in the sheet maybe....16 He sadly died on 5 September 1863 in Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, following an accident. The Stockton and Hartlepool Mercury on Wednesday 9 September 1863 reported the fatal omnibus accident: At twenty minutes to eight o'clock on Saturday night last, an old man, named William Greathead, was crossing Stockton High Street, between the town hall and the Shambles, when he was accidentally run over by an omnibus belonging to Mr J P Skeene. He was taken up and conveyed to his residence where he had prompt medical attendance, but he had received injuries of such a severe nature, that he died the following day. The deceased was 73 years of age. An inquest was held on the body on Monday evening, at the town hall, before Mr John Settle, the Coroner. From the evidence, it appeared, that there was no blame attributable to the driver of the omnibus. no bones had been broken, but it appeared that the vehicle had passed over the lower part of his body and injured the kidney. The deceased was laid on his face when picked up, after the omnibus had gone over him. The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death". The deceased was by trade a tailor.17,18,19 William was buried on 8 September 1863 in St Thomas, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England.1

In the census of 31 March 1901 in 20 Gray Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 19 West Row, Hesleden, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead William was a miner putter boy.6 William served in the Merchant Navy in WW1.7 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 18 West Row, Monk Hesleden, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of Catherine Greathead William was a labourer at Hutton Henry Seweage works run by Easington Council.8 He was a coalminer coalcutter who worked below ground between 1923 and 1926 and then rose to being a surface worker in 1952. He married Evelyn Milburn, daughter of William James Milburn and Mary Oughton, on 29 September 1923 in Primitive Methodist Chapel, Garforth, Yorkshire, England, They were married by Primitive Methodists certificate William aged 32 Evelyn Milburn aged 29 witnessed by George Milburn and Irene Milburn by Thomas W Bates. Evelyn lived at 9 Hildethorpe Terrace, Garforth.9,10 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register William was listed as living at 14 Sycamore Road, Sedgefield, Durham, England, with his wife Evelyn. And two of their children. William was a Coal Cutter working below ground.4 His brother Edward died on 17 September 1942 aged 42.11 William and George received Probate on their brother's estate on 9 August 1944 in Llandudno.11 William died in 1973 in Durham, England.12

William was a Coal Cutter working below ground.2 Evelyn died on 18 March 1976 in Westfields Nursing Home, 39 West Cliff, Whitstable, Kent, England, aged 81.6,7 Evelyn did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 7 June 1976 in Brighton. Her effects were valued at £2,187.7

     William Duncan Greathead was born on 4 January 1929 in Front Street, Sedgefield, Durham, England.1 He was the son of William Greathead and Evelyn Milburn. He married Constance Ford, daughter of Alexander Ford, on 26 January 1952 in Parish Church of Stockton, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, the marriage took place after the banns had been read, William was aged 22 and Constance was aged 19. The ceremony was performed by Leslie Austin and was witnessed by Gordon Albert Tempest and Marie Eleanor Middleton Durham. William gave his address as 14 Sycamore Road, Tidburn and was a storekeeper. Constance gave hers as 33 Willington Street.2 William died on 14 October 1977 in 13 Stanhope Road, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, aged 48.3,4,5 William did not leave a will. Administration papers were issued on 28 November 1977 in Newcastle upon Tyne. His effects were valued at £2,112.5
