Ernest Edward Turmaine was born on 27 May 1883 in 140 Northgate Street, Canterbury, Kent, England, His father's occupation was listed on her birth certificate as a brick maker. Ernest was the twin of Alfred who died at birth.2,3 He was the son of William Turmaine and Ann Maria Dawkins.1 He was baptised on 1 July 1883 in St Gregory the Great, Canterbury, Kent, England.1 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 140 Northgate Street, Canterbury, Kent, England, he was listed as the son of William Turmaine Ernest was a scholar.4 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 140 Northgate Street, Canterbury, Kent, England, he was listed as the son of William Turmaine Ernest was a blacksmith's labourer.5 He married Ethel Eliza Stroud, daughter of Stephen Friday Stroud and Eliza Ann Honeybourne, on 27 April 1907 in Parish Church, Dover, Kent, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Stephen Stroud and Edith Gertrude Turmaine. Ernest gave his occupation as a Fireman. Both Ernest and Eliza gave their addresses as 17 Pauls Place.1,6 He died on 21 May 1940 Ernest was a greaser and a Merchant Seaman in the Southern Railway Cross Channel Ferries. He was lost aboard S.S.Maid of Kent when she was sunk by dive-bombers alongside the quay at Dieppe, during the evacuation of B.E.F. from France bombed by Stukas. He was commemorated on the Merchant Seaman's War Memorial at Tower Hill Gardens, London, Panel 66. He was very deaf aged 56.7,8
