William Ferris1

William Ferris
William Ferris was born on 18 July 1888 in New York, New Jersey, USA.2,3,4 He was the son of William Ferris and Sarah Jane Cosgrave.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 54 Darby Street, Bolton, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the step son of Robert Greathead.6 He married Sarah Ballard, daughter of Edward Ballard and Susanna Simpson, on 4 March 1908 in Register Office, Bolton, Lancashire, England, by certificate. The ceremony was witnessed by Henry Jones and Ellen Ballard. William gave his address as 2 Bradford Park, Bolton and was working as a machine minder in the Bleachworks. Sarah gave her address as 109 Leicester Street, Bolton and was working as a cotton reeler. Both of them were aged nineteen.7,8 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 3 Flear Bottom, Bolton, Lancashire, England, he was listed as the step son of Robert Greathead William was a general labourer at the paper mill, living with his wife and son in his step father's home.9 William, Sarah and their two children Eugene and William travelled aboard SS Corsican of the Allan Line Steamship Co. Ltd leaving Liverpool on 27 June 1913 bound for Quebec in Canada. William was listed as GF Ferris but I am pretty sure it is William. He confirms this on his naturalization papers.10 William signed his attestation papers on 28 November 1914 in Regiment 1623. He stated he was married to Sarah, his address was 102 McNab Street, N Hamilton and his trade was a teamster. He was five foot five inches tall, had a chest measurement of 36.5 inches, a dark complexion, blue eyes and hard brown hair. He served overseas with the Fifth Field Ambulance Corps and was a life member of the Canadian Legion Branch 58.4,3 William was at Vimy and was in the military during 1915 through to 1918, he came home in 1919. Due to his position in the military, that of a stretcher bearer with the 5th Field Ambulance, he sustained shoulder damage and according to the records, atrophy of muscles of left arm, this left William with limited use of his left arm. He also had orbital cellulitis which was a very bad eye infection, which developed an ulcer and his vision was impaired after this. He had surgery and this left the eye lid droopy and the eye looking towards the left.3 His wife Sarah died on 4 February 1933 in General Hospital, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, aged 44 from a lung infection. Her usual address was 133 Barons Avenue.11 He married Lilly Grainge Darby on 21 April 1950 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Lilly was listed as Lilly Grainge on his naturalisation papers.12,13 William was listed as a caretaker aged 69, five foot five inches tall, dark greying hair, fair complexion and bue eyes (although later in the same document his eyes are described as brown) on his naturalisation papers submitted on 14 February 1958. He applied stating he was a british subject, which was disputed by the officials as he was born in New York. He was eventually granted 6 January 1959.12 William and Lilly were living at 133 Barons Avenue North, Hamilton, Ontario.12 William died on 28 May 1966 in St Joseph's Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, aged 77 His usual address was 133 Barons Avenue North.3 An obituary appeared in the newspaper, The Hamilton Spectator on 30 May 1966. It said: Ferris, William--At St. Joseph's Hospital on Saturday, May 28, 1966, William Ferris, 133 Barons Avenue North, in his seventy-eighth year, beloved husband of Lily Grainge, dear father of Eugene of Paris, William, Alfred, Mrs. Cyril Turnbull (Eileen), Mrs. James Butler (Grace), Mrs. Sam McGahey (Marie), all of Hamilton, Mrs. Stan Galuska (Norah) of Brantford and Mrs. Ernie Collins (Margaret) of Toronto, step-father of John Darby, England, Wilfred of Burlington, and Christopher, Mrs. John Bellingham, both of Hamilton; brother of Louis Greathead, Dundas. Also surviving are 44 grandchildren and seven great-grand children. Mr. Ferris served overseas with the Fifth Field Ambulance Corps, 1914-18 War, and was a life member of the Canadian Legion Branch 58. Resting at the L.G. Wallace Funeral Home, 151 Ottawa Street North, until Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Then to Holy Family Church for Requiem Mass at 10a.m. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary Monday evening at 8:30 p.m.3 William was buried on 31 May 1966 in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, after a Requiem mass at the Holy Family Church.3
