     William Mathew Greathead was born on 15 May 1864 in Leyburn, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He was the son of William Felburn Greathead and Isabella Pierse. He was baptised on 5 June 1864 in Leyburn, Yorkshire, England, his father was a painter.3 William, Isabella, Sarah and baby William sailed on SS Germania bound for New York in 1864.4 In the census of 26 June 1870 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, USA, he was listed as the son of William Felburn Greathead.5 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in Cornforth Hill, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, a seafarer in the Royal Naval Reserve.6 He married Jane Ann Benson, daughter of Thomas Benson and Jane Harrison, in 1892 in Richmond, Yorkshire, England.7 William was admitted as a boatman in Tyne Dstrict on 10 November 1892 with a salary of £55-£80, he was awarded a 1st star allowance of £2 10s. On 1 July 1895 his salary was increased from £63-£85 and granted 2 stars and 2s per week deom 9 November 1907. He was at West Hartlepool port from 27 May 1895 and later Folkestone on 24 October 1903 and granted 3rd and 4th stars from 1 April 1912.8 William was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 34 Wansbeck Gardens, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, William was a boatman working for HM customs. Also in the household are Uncle John Harrison a retired miller and cousin Harrison Wingle a tailor.9 He became a Preventative Man in Folkestoneon 1 October 1905 and wa sappointed Assistant to Immigration Officer on 13 May 1910. he was grated his 5th star on 19 November 1913.8 William was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 30 Penfold Road, Folkestone, Kent, England, William was an officer of HM Customs and Exciseman. His house contained five rooms. His wife was staying with her mother in 15 The Green, Richmond in Yorkshire.10 William was appointed a Preventative Man on 1 April 1912 with a salary of 34s 6d-35s a week and was awarded his 6th star on 10 November 1917.8 William's mother was staying with him and Jane at the time of her death at 30 Penfold Road, Folkestone on 25 December 1912.11 His wife Jane died on 1920 in Folkestone, Kent, England.12 William was appointed as an Assistant Immigration Officer from 6 August 1920 and deescribed as such in the Edinburgh Gazette of 7 September 1920.13,14 William was listed as head of household in the census of 19 June 1921 in 16 Warren Road, Folkestone, Kent, England, William was an Immigration officer he seems to have adopted his niece Nancy Benson and she and his sister Sarah Jane Greathead complete the household with one visitor.15 The Edinburgh Gazette of 21 October 1921 stated that William Matthew Greathead, Esq., Aliens Officer, Harbour Station, Folkestone was awarded the Cross of Chevalier by order of the Crown.16 William died on 26 September 1924 in 16 Warren Road, Folkestone, Kent, England, aged 60 he had been a member of the Immigration staff in Folkestone Harbour.17,18,19 The will of William was proved on 29 October 1924 in London to Alfred Benson a butcher, his brother in law and adopted daughter's father. His effects were valued at £1151 14s 7d.18

His scissors were engraved with his name and have been preserved and are in the hands of his great grandaughter.2 Her husband Walter died on 1895.2 She married George Bilton Greathead, son of William Greathead and Anne Bilton, in 1897 in Leeds Registered Building, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.2,4,5,6 Her husband George Bilton Greathead died on 1897 George and Annie had no children and she did not remarry.7,2,8 Ann was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 19 Hall Lane, Wortley, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, Ann was a lodging housekeeper.9

In the census of 5 April 1891 in 5 No 55 Edmondsley, Chester le Street, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of Mark Greathead.2 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Wingate, Easington, Durham, England, she was listed as the servant and general domestic.3 She married James Raine Maddison in 1904 in Easington, Durham, England.4,5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 8 Institute Sreet, Wheatley Hill Colliery, Easington, Durham, England, she was listed as the wife of James Raine Maddison.6 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Louisa was listed as living at 11 Cain Terrace, Easington, Durham, England, with her husband James. James was a retired coal miner living with his wife and children. Sarah was listed as ana invalid.7 Louisa died in 1955 in Sunderland, Durham, England.8

     Doris Maud Greathead was born on 9 March 1920 in Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Daniel Saunders Greathead and Alice Williams. On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Doris Maud Greathead was listed as living at 75 Lozells Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, with her parents Doris was a cycle liner.3 She married Ernest Edward Phillips on 24 July 1941 in Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.4,2 Alice and three of her children, Doris, Arthur and Ivy, were together for this photograph taken in December 1963.5 Doris died on 4 September 1984 in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Edgebaston, Warwickshire, England, aged 64 from respiratory failure and meningitis.6
