Annie Greathead was born in 1882 in Blandford, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, England.1,2 She was the daughter of Thomas Greathead and Sarah Petchey Simpkin. In the census of 5 April 1891 in Granby Cottage, Oxford Road, Chesterton, Cambridgeshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Tom Greathead.3 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 156 Den Hill, Lambeth, London, England, she was listed as the kitchen maid of Lewis and Annie Levy.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 46 Grosvenor Square, St George, London, England, she was listed as a servant and domestic cook for Florence Realte. There were seven other servants living in this 24 roomed home.5 She was found on a passenger list she arrived on Ellis Island on 23 February 1912. She travelled on the ship "Saint Paul" leaving Southampton on 14 February 1912. The ship's manifest stated she was single and visiting her friend Mrs S Arneson at Ocean View Avenue, Wood Haven, Long Island, USA. She was five foot nine inches tall, with fresh complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. Her occupation was a cook. Her father Mr T Greathead was listed as her next of kin living at Granby Cottage, Oxford Road, Cambridge
The "Saint Paul" was built by William Cramp & Sons Shipbuilders, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1895. She was 11,629 gross tons; 554 (bp) feet long; 63 feet wide. Steam quadruple expansion engines, twin screw. Service speed 19 knots. 1,370 passengers (350 first class, 220 second class, 800 third class). She was built for American Line, in 1895 and named Saint Paul. Southampton-New York service. Used by US Navy as auxiliary cruiser in Spanish-American War of 1898. Transferred to United States Navy, American flag, in 1918 and renamed USS Knoxville. Armed transport service. Capsized while completing refit in April 1918. Laid-up 1918-20. Returned to American Line, in 1920 and renamed St. Paul. Further trans-Atlantic service. Scrapped in Germany in 1923.2
