William Orton1

William Orton was born about 1778.2 He married Elizabeth Dodsworth on 27 April 1807 in Billingham, Durham, England.3,4 He was a butcher.5 Willliam was convicted at York Castle on 10 March 1821 charged with a forgery, passing an altered bank note. He was found guilty and sentenced to life. He was placed on the prison hulk Bellerophon on 27 May 1821. He was placed on the ship Minerva on 21 July 1821 which set sail for New South Wales arriving on 26 March 1822.2,6 William was indicted for having at Black Creek on 20 April 1845 passed forged orders worth £1 each drawn on John Welsh with the intent of defrauding William Jones. The jury found him guilty, but since he seemed to have had good charector in New South Wales he was given a very light sentence, namely two years imprisonment.7 William died before 1851.3
