His grandaughter Mary T Darkey was staying with him, and his daughter Mary J Rouse was listed as a visitor and there were four servants. His wife was staying as a "visitor" Ben Rhydding which was devoted to the treatment of diseases by means of Hydropathy.11 John died on 6 March 1876 in Camberwell, London, England.12,13 The will dated 6 March 1876 of John Temperley, late of Braeside House, Dulwich, Wood Park was proved on 7 June 1878 following his death by his son Henry Greathead Temperley, Henry Wlliam Carter and Robert Starey. His personal estate being sworn under £100,000. His wife, described as Helen Maria Temperley was left his household furniture and effects and an immediate legacy of £200 abolutely, and for life his residance and £1,500 per annum. He also left houses to his late brother's wife and a niece. All three houses to go to his son on their deaths. He left £100 to the Merchant Seaman's Orphan Asylum and several other bequests with the residue to be divided between all his children. He had been a partner in the firm Temerleys, Carter and Dark. This was reported in The Times newspaper of 21 June 1878.12

Clarence Royal Greathead

Clarence Royal Greathead was born on 5 June 1897 in 13 Bentick Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England.1,2 He was the son of George William Greathead and Ada Greig. He was baptised on 20 June 1897 in St Paul's, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.3 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 164 Sherriff Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George William Greathead.4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 108 Studley Road, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George William Greathead Clarence was at school.5,6 Clarence had been educated at Henry Smith College and was an apprentice with Messrs Grabham and Co, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He enlisted after the outbreak of war in September 1914.6 Clarence was a Private in the 4th Battalion (Territorials). He enlisted in Hexham, Northumberland with the number of 1850 in the Machine Gun section. Clarence Royal Greathead died on 16 June 1915 in Flanders, Belgium, aged 18 at 5:30am while he was incharge of a machine gun.7,8,6 He was carefully buried in Wieltage, Belgium, with a cross bearing his inscription marking the place. He was described by his officer as a brave and fearless soldier and will be missed by his battalion. He was later buried at Ypres Menin Gate, Memorial Leper, Panel 8 and 12.7,6,9 Clarence's name appears on the many commemorative plaques to WW1. The Oblisque in Hartlepool in Victory Square which is on the South side of Victory Road and its junction with Avenue Road. His name is also recorded on the Henry Smith Comprehensive School memorial panel. The School is in King Oswy Drive. Also in St Paul's Church in Grange Road there is a very elaborate plaque carrying his name. Also on a roadside memorial stone in Cleadon erected in November 1920 in memory of men from Cleadon who died in WW1. Interestingly this stone also records those men of Cleadon who served in WW2 which is rather lovely. All Saints Church in Cleadon Lane in Cleadon has a wall plaque to those who fell in WW2 and includes Clarence's name
Clarence also appears on the 8th column of the WW1 Roll of Honour of the 4th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers at the Hencotes TA Centre.10 On 15 December 2000 Clarence's 1914-15 Star medal was part of a lot sold in lot 456 for £100.11

She was baptised on 10 January 1895 in St Paul's, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, St Pauls Church West Hartlepool Register of Baptisms 1891-1901 page 43 entry 715 by B A Patten.2 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 164 Sherriff Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of George William Greathead.4 Ettie was admitted to West Hartlepool School for girls om 2. July 1906 and left being too old on 19 February in 1909. The family lived in Musgrave Road.5 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 108 Studley Road, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, she was listed as the daughter of George William Greathead Ettie was a shop assistant in a piano shop.6,7 She married William Burdon on 4 June 1919 in South Shields, Durham, England.8,9 Her husband William died on 1945 in West Hartlepool, Durham, England.10,11 Her father George died on 12 July 1945.12,10 Ettie received Administration on her mothers effects on 2 August 1945 in Durham.10 She married Walter Simpson in 1947 in West Hartlepool, Durham, England.13 Ettie died in April 1985 in Thanet, Kent, England, aged 90.14
