Robert Featherstone Greathead1

#8489, b. 29 March 1836
Last Edited=2 Jul 2016
Robert Featherstone Greathead was born on 27 February 1835 in Dudley, Staffordshire, England.2 He was baptised on 29 March 1836 in Hinstock, Shropshire, England, at the same time as his brother Edward William and sister Charlotte Susannah.3 He was the son of Featherstone Greathead and Sophia Charlotte Swindon. In the census of 6 June 1841 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, he was listed as the son of Featherstone Greathead.4 Robert was a steward whose last vessel was Arena. He recalled at the Old Bailey on 22 August 1855 that on Thursday 9 August at about 2:30 in the morning he met a lady called Eliza Brown in the City Road. She asked him for some money for a drink. He told her he was not inclined and wanted to go home. She pressed him suggesting they went to Levy's in the City Road. Apparently they walked together to the top of Paradise Street when Robert felt a twitch in his coat pocket, hearing a snap and found his watch missing. Two men approached saying they would fetch the police. They did not return. Robert under cross examination stated he had been ashore for three months and had been up to the Eagle that night and then to a friend's house where he had drunk only three glasses of wine. He declared he was sober.
Eliza was aged 18 and found guilty of theft. One of the men who said they would call the police was also found guilty of receiving. His name was Edward Taylor aged 19, and this was his second offence. They were confined for nine months for stealing the watch with a value of six shillings.5 Robert set off on the rigging ship Zephyr as a steward on 14 December 1855 into the whaling grounds of the Pacific, returning on 5 August 1859. The Port of Registry was New Bedford.6 Robert began another voyage on 5 August 1857.2
