Dorothy Mary Marjorie Greathead was born on 30 October 1918 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia.1,2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Arthur Milner Greathead and Esther Davenport Blair. She married Sydney George Manning on 28 March 1942 in Cnr Tyler & High St Reservoir, Victoria, Australia.6,7,5

I was told a very interesting story about one of Dorothy's husbands ancestors, Zachariah Shaw which I was priviledged to receive. Zachariah was a draper in Dublin and in 1834 was found guilty, together with an associate Robert Clayton, of forging Government Stamps. Presumeably these were Government Seals as postage stamps were not issued until 1840 in England. Zachariah's wife Julia testified against Robert Clayton, who was the etcher and forger, so that the Government had an airtight case. In return Zachariah was able to take his wife and seven children to Australia. Robert Clayton then helped the Government to combat forgery and in return was also able to take his wife and family to Australia.
Both families received 25 pounds stirling in gold sovereigns and had cabin accommodation on the Royal Admiral which docked in Sydney on 22 January 1835. A further 50 pounds was given to each family together with Tickets of Exemption which had to be renewed each year. The condition was that no-one could return to England or Ireland.
This story is supported by correspondence to the Colonial Secretary in Australia including letters from the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and the Revenue Office. Incredible!
As an aside, Robert Clayton was the Artist and Etcher for the first New South Wales Stamps issued on 1 January 1850.3 Her husband Sydney died on 1977 in Heildelberg, Victoria, Australia.5 Dorothy died in 1989 in Heildelberg, Victoria, Australia.8,5

The ceremony was witnessed by Charles Field and Peter W Field. James gave his occupation as a clerk and lived at 28 Claremont Street, while Sarah gave her address as De Beauvoir Road.1,3,2,4 James, Sarah and baby Wilson were nominated for assisted passage under the new government assisted emigrated scheme, probably planning to sail with Thomas and Martha.
