William Frederick Calow aka Bonny Billy
William Frederick Calow was also known by the name of Bonny Billy Calow.2 He was born in 1854 in Gateshead, Durham, England.1 He was the son of Frederick Calow and Dinah Shield. He married Christina Rowell in 1873 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham, England.3 William was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 148 Cuthbert Road, Gateshead, Durham, England, William was a bar manager living with his wife and children.1,4 He married Mary A ... Did he marry bigamously, or maybe he just lived with Mary. I know to Christina declared herself to be widow on 1901 and 1911 census. William and Mary are described as husband and wife on the 1891 and 1901 census returns.5,2 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 19 Mill Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, he was listed as a boarder of Henry Hopper and his wife. Henry was a brass finisher and William was listed as one also. I think this is incorrect and probably an assumption on the part of the enumerator or Henry. William and Mary were listed as husband and wife. I belie this to be untrue, William's wife Christina was living in Gateshead with their children.6 There is a lovely pictures of William with his son William jnr.2 William was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 10 Foster Street, Jarrow, Durham, England, William was a brass finisher living with Mary described as his wife and their two sons.7 William died in 1907 in Gateshead, Durham, England.2,8

Hilda Gordon Calow
It was rumoured that Hilda was a result of a liaison with the doctor for whom Margaret kept house, or was a domestic servant. She became good friends with Neal Huitson # 6252 who she named as a beneficiary and joint executor of her will. She must have had a lonely life, but it is believed there was a boyfriend as she left a gypsy ring to Neal. It is also believed that she was brought up by her grandparents as she was never seen at any of the Huitson family gatherings.

There are other family stories saying she was an attractive and confident woman, who first trained as a book binder and later became the manageress of the tea-rooms at the Empire Theatre in Newcastle"s Haymarket. She had a relationship with the theatre doctor and had many friends amongst the actors and variety acts of that time. She played Golf, which was quite daring for a young woman at that time. Hilda was brought up by her Grandmother Christina, it was not uncommon in those days to "give" a child to a Grandparent for many reasons, such as overcrowding, domestic help etc. Margaret was affectionate towards her. She did attend her mother"s funeral.1,2 Hilda Gordon Calow was born on 6 June 1905 in 83 Askew Road, Gateshead, Durham, England.1,3,4 She was the daughter of Wilfred Huitson and Margaret Anne Calow. In the census of 2 April 1911 in 4 Cruddas Terrace, Gateshead, Durham, England, she was listed as the grandaughter of Christina Calow.5 Hilda was an attractive and confident woman, who first trained as a book binder and later became the manageress of the tea-rooms at the Empire Theatre in Newcastle's Haymarket.
