Timothy Greathead was born about 1821.2 He was the son of John Greathead and Hannah Green. He was baptised on 30 March 1823 in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, England, he was baptised with his brother Samuel.3 Timothy was committed on 14 December 1842 by T A Green as a rogue and vagabond to one calendar month hard labour. He was listed as aged 21. He worked in the mill in Bedford Gaol, New House of Correction and was discharged on 13 January 1843 and described as orderly.4 Timothy was admitted as a male pauper on 11 September 1847 to Hull Lunatic Asylum, Asylum Lane (later Argyle Street), Anlaby Road.5 Timothy entered the Hull Asylum again on 2 July 1849 as a male pauper.5 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Hull Lunatic Asylum, Asylum Lane, Anlaby Road, Hull, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as an inmate and listed as aged 31 and a lunatic.6 Timothy was transferred to St John's Asylum in Bracebridge Heath in Lincoln on 12 August 1859.

Designed by architects Hamilton and Thomas Percy in a grand Italian-Style, the building now is now a shell of its former greatness. The asylum was built using county rates at a cost of around £30,000.5 In the census of 7 April 1861 in St John’s Asylum, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, he was listed as the inmate he was listed as age 41 and a worsted weaver.7 In the census of 2 April 1871 he was listed as an inmate at St John’s Asylum, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, he was listed as a weaver and his surname was mis-spelt as Greathed and he was described sadly as an imbecile.8 In the census of 3 April 1881 in St John’s Asylum, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, he was listed as an inmate of.9 The records for St John's Hospital, Bracebridge, formerly, the Lincolnshire County Lunatic Asylum are held in Lincolnshire archives.10
