Thomas Rivers1

     Thomas was a prolific Victorian nurseryman of Rivers Nursery which was established in 1730 and sold by the family in 1985. His plant breeding and development resulted in the "early rivers" nectarines, plums, cherries, peaches and most famous pear. He also introduced the late Valencia orange into California USA.1

     John Greathead was born on 12 April 1845 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.1,2,3,4,5,6 He was the son of Isaac Greathead and Ann Morrall. He was baptised on 13 September 1847 in St Philip, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, Margaret, Elizabeth, William, John, George, Isaac and Ann were all baptised together. This may suggest that after the baptism of their first child in 1832 they followed another religion. Non-conformity in Birmingham at this time was extremely popular. For some reason the family must have decided to return to the Church of England in 1847 and rebaptise their children.7,3,8,6 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 42 Lawley Street, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the son of Isaac Greathead.9,1 He married Harriet Bolstridge, daughter of Josiah Bolstridge, on 1 August 1864 in St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Josiah Bolstridge and Elizabeth Bolstridge. John was a brass founder.1,10,11,12,13 John was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 at 36 Railway Terrace, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, John was a brass hinge drawer.14 John signed on on 15 October 1878 into 66th Infantry Brigade at Lichfield. His regimental number was 2107. He was 24 years and 11 months old he had previously been in 1st Warwickshire Militia. He signed with his mark. John was five foot six inches tall, with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair. His chest measurement was 37 inches. He embarked for Ceylon on 11 December 1879.4,15 John stayed in Ceylon for almost five years returning on 30 November 1884.12 John was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 5 April 1891 in 25 Gibb Street, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, John was a carriage lamp maker.16 John was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 at 1Ch 39 Ho Cam Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, John was a brassworker.17 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 6 James Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, he was listed as the father in law of Thomas Kennedy John was a brass dresser. He and Harriet had ten children prior to 1911 five of which had died by 1911.18 John died in 1916 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.19 John was buried in April 1916 in Witton Cemetery, Moor Lane, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.20

The ceremony was witnessed by George Blinkarne and George Greathead.5,6,7 He witnessed the marriage of Peter Greathead and Frances Turley on 25 December 1833 in St Peter and St Paul, Aston, Warwickshire, England.8,7 Isaac was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in New Canal Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, Isaac was living with his wife and children.      Harriet Bolstridge was born about 1845 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.2,3 She was the daughter of Josiah Bolstridge. She married John Greathead, son of Isaac Greathead and Ann Morrall, on 1 August 1864 in St Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Josiah Bolstridge and Elizabeth Bolstridge. John was a brass founder.1,4,5,6,7 In the census of 2 April 1871 in 36 Railway Terrace, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, she was listed as the wife of John Greathead Harriet was a charwoman.8 Harriet was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 3 April 1881 in 15 Greens Village, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, M1.9 Harriett and her son Samuel were living in Ashley Street were charged with assaulting bailiffs who went to seize goods and met with opposition. The bailiffs were kicked and punched and much of the furniture damaged. He was baptised on 13 October 1834 in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales.3,4 In the census of 6 June 1841 in Petters Street, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead.5 He was a Merchants Clerk in 1851. In the census of 30 March 1851 at Market Place, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead James was a merchants clerk.6 He married Esther Rugg, daughter of Thomas Rugg, on 14 July 1859 in St George, Bloomsbury, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by George Rugg, Maria and Ellen Alamaine.      Joseph Gibson was born about 1865 in Ingelby Arncliffe, Yorkshire, England.1 He married Mary Hannah Greathead, daughter of Henry Greathead and Mary Thackeray, in 1889 in All Saints, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, after the banns had been read on 24 November, 1 and 8 December.2,3,4 Joseph was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in Station View, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, Joseph was a joiner living with his wife.5 Joseph was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in Romanby, Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, Joseph was a railway joiner.6 Joseph died before 1929.7

He was baptised about 1840 in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales.5,6 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Market Place, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead John was a scholar.7 He witnessed the marriage of Mary Wythe Collins and Francis Tiddy Greathead on 30 October 1860 in Stalbridge, Dorset, England.8,9,10 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Segonluin Terrace, Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire, Wales, he was listed as the lodger of Catherine Hughes a landed proprietress, her sister Jane and niece Laura Thomas. John was a stationer.11 John enlisted into 10th Infantry of the US army on 21 January 1866. He was described as having blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion and being 5 foot 6 inches tall.      Nicholas T Greathead was born in 1837 in Llangefni, Anglesey, Wales.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Samuel Greathead and Jane Treweek. He was baptised on 18 October 1837 in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales.5,6 In the census of 6 June 1841 in Petters Street, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead.7 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Market Place, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead Nicholas was a scholar.8 In the census of 1861 in New Brunswick, Canada, he was listed as lodging with James Henry Russell. There were many others lodging at the same time. I guess all searching for a better life! His occupation was listed as a clerk.9 Nicholas emigrated to Canada.2 He married Laura Jack. He was baptised on 16 September 1842 in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, William was baptised with his brother Richard.6,7 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Market Place, Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, he was listed as the son of Samuel Greathead Richard was a scholar.8 He married Maria Cantrill, daughter of Henry John Cantrill and Ann Newport, on 18 March 1866 in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by James William McConnell and Sarah Ellen Scott. William was a book keeper and gave his address as 24 Bold Street in Hulme, Maria wgave her address as 33 Dudley Street in Hulme.9,3,10,11 He was a clerk on 30 January 1870. William died on 3 May 1870 in Manchester, Lancashire, England, aged 27.12,3,4,13
