She was baptised on 21 August 1859 in St Paulinus, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England, her parents were listed as John and Ann Greathead.3 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Oak Tree Street, Catterick, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of John Greathead.4 In the census of 2 April 1871 in Catterick, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of John Greathead Ellen was a scholar.5 In the census of 3 April 1881 in Finkle Street, Richmond, Yorkshire, England, she was listed as the servant to the Tennet family.6 She married Henry Scott, son of James Scott, on 20 November 1889 in All Saints, Otley, Yorkshire, England, after the banns had been read on 3, 10 and 17 November. The ceremony was witnessed by Richard Beck and Emma Greathead, Ellen sister. Henry was a labourer, like his father James. Both Henry and Ellen gave their address as Otley.      Henry Scott was born about 1862 in Brompton on Swale, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He was the son of James Scott.3 He married Ellen Mary Greathead, daughter of John Greathead and Ann Smith, on 20 November 1889 in All Saints, Otley, Yorkshire, England, after the banns had been read on 3, 10 and 17 November. The ceremony was witnessed by Richard Beck and Emma Greathead, Ellen sister. Henry was a labourer, like his father James. Both Henry and Ellen gave their address as Otley. Henry signed the register with a X but Ellen signed her name.1,4,3,5 Henry was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in Leeming Cottage, Catterick, Yorkshire, England, Henry was living with his wife and daughter and working as an agricultural labourer.6 Henry was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in 19 Philip Lane, Colne, Lancashire, England, Henry was a stoker in a refuse destructor living with his wife and three children.7 Henry died in 1929 in Burnley, Lancashire, England.8

     Mary Orton White was born on 29 July 1878 in Darlaston, Staffordshire, England.1,2 She was the daughter of George White. She married Frank Greathead, son of Thomas William Greathead and Maria Underhill, on 17 May 1904 in Holy Trinity, Birchfield, Staffordshire, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Frank Alfred Crave, Mabel Coleman Orton and L Greathead. Mary gave her address as 8 Freer Road, Birchfield, Stafford.3,4 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 37 Wye Cliff Road, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Frank Greathead.5 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 37 Wye Cliff Road, Handsworth, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the wife of Frank Greathead.6 Mary took her son Norman on a round voyage leaving Liverpool on 2 September 1926. They sailed aboard SS Andorinha from the Yeoward Line bound for the Canary Islands. The ship was carring 68 passengers and was registered as 1421 tonnage. The Master for the voyage was A Frith. They arrived back in Liverpool on 16 September 1926 with last port of call being Las Palmas, Spain. They gave their address in UK as Nacrodal, Wycliffe Road, Handsworth Birmingham.7,8 Frank, Mary and their son Norman sailed on 27 May 1929 from Southampton to the Canary Island on board the ship Otranto. They returned to Southampton on 8 June 1929 giving their address in UK as c/o J W Lazenby, 56 Corporation Street, Birmingham.7,9 Frank and Mary returned to Southampton on 21 May 1934 from New York onboard the ship Empress of Britain, they travelled first class. They gave their address as The Dawn, Hamstead Hill, Handsworth. Frank was described as an ironmonger.10 Frank and Mary returned to Liverpool on 15 January 1935 from Jamaica onboard the ship Tilapa, they travelled first class. They gave their address as The Dawn, Hamstead Hill, Handsworth. Frank was described as an ironmonger.11 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Mary was listed as living at 29 Hamstead Hill, Handsworth, Warwickshire, England, with her husband Frank. Frank was an ironmonger.2 Her husband Frank died on 4 April 1965 in The Dawn, 29 Hamstead Hill, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, aged 86.12,13 Mary died on 8 April 1966 in The Dawn, 29 Hamstead Hill, Handsworth, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, aged 87.14,13 Mary was buried in April 1966 in Witton Cemetery, Moor Lane, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.15 The will of Mary was proved on 14 July 1966 in Birmingham to Midland Bank Executor and Trustee Ltd. Her effects were valued at £82,380.13

     Featherstone Greathead was born on 28 December 1810 in Cranborne, Dorset, England.2,3 He was the son of Robert Featherstone Greathead and Elizabeth Hoskins. He was baptised on 25 November 1811 in St Mary and St Bartholomew, Cranborne, Dorset, England, Here is a picture of the font and Church.2,3,4 He married Sophia Charlotte Swindon on 19 October 1829 in St George Hanover Square, Westminster, London, England, after the banns had been read. The ceremony was witnessed by Aaron Teakbe and M C Stanton.5,6,7,8 Featherstone was described in the Excise Minute Book on 21 January 1834 as being an Expectant instructed in the Surrey Collection with a Certificate dated the 20th instant. He was instructed to be an Expectant in the Stourbridge Collection.9 On 1 December 1834 he was moved from Stourbridge to the Manchester Collection.10 Featherstone was on 30 June 1835 was minuted as taking over from John Bennett Officer of Newport 5th Ride, Shropshire Collection, he had been Supernumerary in Manchester Collection.11 On 3 July 1837 Featherstone took over from Robert Pugh as Officer of Hatfield Ride which was in the Hertfordshire Collection. Featherstone had requested a move to this Ride from Newport 2nd Ride, Shropshire Collection.12 Featherstone moved from the Hatfield Ride to succeed from Charles Barnard Morris Officer of Alloa 7th Division, Stirling Collection as Morris was being discharged as unfit to be entrusted with the care of the Revenue on 24 December 1838.13 Featherstone was no longer wanted as Officer of Alloa 7th Division, Stirling Collection and moved to succeed Thomas Miller, Officer in Glasgow 21 Division, Glasgow Collection on 21 October 1839.14 Willliam Lee, officer of Alloa 1st Division in Stirling Collection, was promoted to an Examiner on 26 November 1839 and Featherstone Greathead will succeed him, at his own Request. A further entry in the minute books on 16 December 1839 confirmed these arrangements.15 Featherstone was listed as the head of the family on the census of 6 June 1841 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, Featherstone was an Excise Officer living with his wife and children.16 Featherstone succeeded John Oldin as Officer of Southwark 2nd Division, London South Collection on 22 February 1842. He was moved on 28 December 1842 to London 3rd Division South Collection.17 Featherstone was transferred from Lambeth 3rd Division London South Collection as he had incurred the Displeasure of the Board, he was removed to Lynn 1st Division on 11 March 1844. On 19 July in that year Featherstone's son Edward lost his life while bathing in the river below the town of Norwich. He got out of his depth and was sinking when Featherstone who was sitting on the bank, jumped in immediately to his assistance and was drawing him into shallow water when he unfortunately slipped and lost hold of his son. He saw him rise to the surface once more but could not reach him. The body was picked up almost immediately by some men but life was extinct. An inquest was held and the verdict of accidental drowning was returned.18,19 Sadly Featherstone once again incurred the displeasure of the Board and was removed to Hull 5th Division on 29 April 1845.20 On 30 October 1846 Featherstone was discharged from the Service, after two recent reprimands and becoming indebted to a tea dealer. He petitioned to be restored on 28 April 1847 but it was rejected.21 Featherstone was listed as head of household in the census of 7 April 1851 at Bradbury Cottage, Isleworth, Middlesex, England, Featherstone was a commercial traveler.22 Featherstone lived in 1854 in 22 Old Street Road, Tower Hamlets.23 Featherstone was described as a House Agent on the birth certificate of his daughter Alice in 1858 and an auctioneer on the marriage certificate of his son Alfred to Suzannah in 1865.24,25 Featherstone was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 7 April 1861 in 219 City Road, Finsbury, London, England, Featherstone was a house agent.26 Featherstone died in 1868 in Islington, London, England, Featherstone lived in Camden Street, Islington.27 Featherstone was buried on 21 August 1868 in Islington Cemetery, Islington, London, England.28

     Thomas Ridsdale was born about 1766.1,2 He was the son of James Ridsdale and Elizabeth Robinson. He married Elizabeth Calvin in 1794 in Catterick, Yorkshire, England.3 He was a housepainter of Catterick. Thomas died in 1835.3 Thomas was buried on 24 July 1835 in St Anne, Catterick, Yorkshire, England.3,2
