Derek Greathead was born on 18 January 1934 Derek (had 6 siblings) was evacuated aged 4 and half from Newcastle to stay with Mr and Mrs Greathead in Chilton. They had no children and asked after the war to adopt him. and changed his name by deed-pole from Dunn just prior to his marriage. Mr Greatheads father was head gardener to Eden estate owned by Sir Timothy Eden older brother of Sir Anthony. Also aware of well known blacksmith in area named Bob Greathead of Bowburn (just died), although believed he had two nephews in Hartlepool.1

In the census of 2 April 1911 in 35 Beechwood Road, Belle Vue, Hartlepool, Durham, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead John was at school.4 In the census of 19 June 1921 in 5 Carr Street, Stockton on Tees, Durham, England, he was listed as the visitor of Charles Dixon and Mary Ann Turner and their grandson Albert Edward Turner. Albert's father was dead, he was the same age 13 as Jack so maybe they were friends. Charles was a painter and decorator working for Croft and Roe in Bishopton Lane.5 He witnessed the marriage of Sarah Ann Greathead and William Wainwright Jackson on 2 April 1927 in All Saints, Stranton, West Hartlepool, Durham, England.6,7 He married Elsie Moody in September 1934 in Register Office, Hartlepool, Durham, England.1,8 Jack served with the Durham Home Guard, 18th Battalion in WW2 signing his papers om 10 August 1942. He was a bricklayer and lived with his wife in 3 Eton Street, Hartlepool. He had served in the Territorial RA from 1928 to 1929. He left on 31 December 1945 when the Home Guard was disbanded.9 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register John was listed as living at 3 Eton Street, West Hartlepool, Durham, England, with his wife Elsie. And their son Jack. John was obviously known as Jack and was a bricklayer in the steelworks.10 His wife Elsie died on 19 April 1996 in Hartlepool, Durham, England, aged 89.11,1 John died on 27 November 1998 in Hospital Of God, Greatham, Hartlepool, Durham, England, aged 90.1,12,13 John did not leave a will.
