Some Maoris who were with him got assistance from a nearby station, but they were unable to save him. He was reported as being the landlord of the Hurinviorani Ferry Hotel.^2,4,9,10,11 Robert was buried in Greytown Cemetery, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, with his wife Emma who died in 1901 as Emma Standen. In July 1888 Herbert is described in a letter from his grandma Jane to her daughter, is aunt Louisa as working in the shop with his father who was a blacksmith. He was aged 14.⁶ He married Constance Anastasia Shutkowski, daughter of Peter Shutkowski and Rosalie Christine Lipinski, on 16 June 1903 in St Marys Catholic Church, Carterton, Masterton, New Zealand, Herberts enlistment papers state he was married on 16 June 1904.^3,7,4,8,9 Herbert enlisted into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 11 June 1918 at Masterton. He was a blacksmith and was posted as a Private in C Company 47th Reinforcement NZEF on 11 September 1918 service number 88942. He was foot 10 inches tall, with gery hair, grey eyes and a ruddy complexion. He was demobbed on 10 March 1919.⁹ Herbert died on 4 March 1938 in Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, aged 63.³ Herbert was buried on 6 March 1938 in Greytown Cemetery, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, in Block III plots 56-57 with his parents John and Mary.^3,10,11,12

     Constance Anastasia Shutkowski was born in 1877 in Gdansk, Poland.² She was the daughter of Peter Shutkowski and Rosalie Christine Lipinski.      Walter Albert Greathead was born on 13 May 1905 in Carterton, New Zealand.^2,3,4 He was the son of George Greathead and Francisca Magdelene Shutkowski. Walter was sent to live with an Aunt and Uncle after his mothers death. It was from their house that he ran away to sea working as a stoker on a ship that took him to Australia. It seemed to me he lead a very hard and rough life there, working as a boxer in the tent shows for quite some time. He was also a cattle station Cook as well, there he learned to make bread.^5,6 He married Bettie Louise Holland in 1932 in New Zealand.^2,3,7 Walter died on 23 January 1984 in Wellington, New Zealand, aged 78.^2,8,1 Walter was buried on 25 January 1984 in Karori Crematorium, Karori, Wellington, New Zealand.¹

     Mabel Rosalia Greathead was born on 27 October 1906 in Carterton, New Zealand.^2,3,4 She was the daughter of George Greathead and Francisca Magdelene Shutkowski. She married Alfred John Edward Anderson, son of Walter Anderson and Herminia Minola, on 22 October 1925 in Masterton, Wellington, New Zealand.^2,5,6 She married John Kirkpatrick Wilson on 19 December 1930 John was Mabel's second husband.^2,3 Mabel died on 23 March 1998 in Masterton, Wellington, New Zealand, aged 91.^2,3

He married Annie Haigh, daughter of Samuel Haigh and Jane Ann Moffatt, on 14 June 1906 in Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, at parents home at rear of butchers shop.^3,4,8 He was a Grocer.⁴ Leonard and Annie and their children had a rather nice photograph taken. My guess is it must have been taken around mid to late 1920s as little Earle as born in 1921 and is seated in the middle of the picture. Standing: Rita, Mervyn, Annie, Gordon, Beatrice, Leonard and Evelyn and Sitting: Harold, Earle and Owen.⁹ His wife Annie died on 5 March 1934 in Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, aged 51.^3,4,6,10 Leonard was buried in Greytown Cemetery, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, in bock II plots 109-110. her husband Leonard was buried with her when he died in 1946.^3,11 Leonard died on 22 July 1946 in Greytown Hospital, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, aged 65.^3,4,6,12,10 Leonard was buried in Greytown Cemetery, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, in block II plots 109-110 with his wife Annie.^3,11

It was reported in The Courier Mail of 7 March 1934 that Mrs. Leonard Greathead, of Greytown, who was suffering from heart trouble, collapsed and died three hours after the first shock. The earthquake caused considerable damage and one other person died.⁹ Annie was buried in Greytown Cemetery, Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, in bock II plots 109-110. her husband Leonard was buried with her when he died in 1946.^2,10

Richard worked as a blacksmith.⁵ Richard was listed as head of household in the census of 30 March 1851 at Norton Heath, Norton Mandeville, Essex, England, Richard was a blacksmith employing one man.⁶ He and Jane Bright emigrated on 5 November 1856 from London, England, arriving in Wellington on 30 Jan 1857 on the ship "Indian Queen. " His wife Jane died on 12 January 1889 in Carterton, Wairarapa, New Zealand, aged 72.³ Richard died on 3 March 1900 in Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, aged 85.³

She married Charles Allin Battes on 10 September 1881 in The Manse, Masterton, Wellington, New Zealand, by Rev James McKee.^4,5 Emma died on 21 August 1892 in Masterton, Wairarapa, New Zealand, aged 30 Her memorium notice appeared in Evening Post, 21 August 1897 sent in by her mother read: Battes— In loving memory of Emma Jane, eldest daughter of the late William Greathead, Masterton, Wairarapa, who died at Masterton 21 August, 1892 in her 31st year. She has gone to her rest, and her troubles are over; She is free from all sorrow and pain; And her ills of this life, which she patiently bore, Will never distress her again.
