Lyndon Henry Greathead was born on 3 October 1901 in Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana.1,2,3 He was the son of Thomas Henry Greathead and Alice Louisa Thalia Gainfort. He was baptised on 25 December 1901 in St George Christ Church, Demerara, British Guiana, his father was described as a civil servant.3 Lyndon received his early training in accountancy. Like his father before him he entered government service in a civilian capacity and for a time was employed in the Georgetown Customs Office. But like many young men he felt the spirit of adventure.3 He was found on a passenger list on 25 July 1923 he arrived on Ellis Island having sailed from Georgetown, Demerara, British Guiana. He travelled on the ship "S S Mayaro". The ship's manifest stated he was single and visiting Mrs H O Yearwood (his sister Stella) 173 Lynwood Street, Brooklyn, USA. He was five foot ten inches tall, with fair complexion, light brown hair and grey eyes. His doctor Dr Clavier from "Woodberry" 85 Murray Street, Georgetown, British Guiana wrote a letter which stated that "Mr L.H. Greathead was fit and you can issue him a ticket to New York" dated 7 June 1923. His passport was signed by the American Consulate at Georgetown on 9 July 1923. He soon obtained a job in the accountanting department of a large Insurance Company in New York.4 In the census of 2 April 1930 in 12 Vanderover Avenue, Howards Beach, Queens, New York, New Jersey, USA, he was listed as the brother in law of Howard Yearwood.5 He married Agnes Goodwillie Cameron, daughter of James Begbe Cameron and Georgina Hamilton, on 3 April 1938 in Elkton, Maryland, USA, Both Agnes and Lyndon were described as clerks and living in Richmond Hill, New York. They did not have any children, but they were always a very hospitable couple and gave much time to their nephew Stuart. Agnes I understand had dark brown hair, was five foot five inches tall and blue eyes.6,3,7 Lyndon was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 1 April 1940 in 136 Lancaster Avenue, Buffalo, New York, New Jersey, USA, Lyndon was an insurance clerk living with his wife.8 Lyndon and Agnes had saved their entire lives to one day own their dream home and retire to Florida. They loved Delray Beach, Florida and spent most Novembers vacationing there. Lyndon had to take a disability leave from work due to cancer surgery, which he survived.3 John died on 27 July 1964 in Light House Point, Delray Beach, Florida, USA, aged 62 he was stricken with a massive heart attack while tending the garden.1,3,9
John was buried on 30 July 1964 in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, North Pompano Beach, Broward, Florida, USA, “Lindy”, as he was affectionately called, was known to do anything for anyone in need. Upon his death this characteristic was acknowledged by a former neighbour from his Queen’s Village days, William Baird, a teacher at the Bronx High School of Science, who wrote a tribute, “The Most Unforgettable Character I Ever Met” and submitted it to the Reader’s Digest. Unfortunately it was never published.3,10
