Frances Mary Teresa Paston-Bedingfeld was born on 13 June 1919 in Oxburgh Hall, Swaffham, Norfolk, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Sir Henry Edward Paston-Bedingfeld and Sybil Lyne-Stephens. She married Frank Douglas Playford on 18 October 1949 Frank was Frances' first husband. Her husband Frank died on 23 January 1956 in Oxburgh Hall, Swaffham, Norfolk, England.4 She married Maitland Gardner Nimmo in 1957 in Surrey, England, Maitland was Frances' second husband.5 Her husband Maitland died on 1977.6 She married Philip James Greathead, son of James Merriman Greathead and Dorothy Charlotte Greathead, on 25 February 1978 Philip was Frances third husband.1 Frances was a woman who has continuously been involved in poverty alleviation issues. It was in 1993 that she decided to set up Breadline Africa to help ease poverty in South Africa. “The ethos is very much that it’s better to let the African person decide what they need and then help them,” she says. She believed that you need to do what you can to help, no matter how enormous the scale of poverty is in South Africa.7 Her husband Philip died on 19 March 1997 in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 77.1,2,8 Frances Greathead was one very special lady. Not only was she one of the founders and trustees ofBreadline Africa but she was a 90 year old woman who still loved to party.Frances Greathead, descendant of a long line of Norfolk Bedingfelds, celebrated her 90th birthday atOxburgh Hall, the family home which was run by theNational Trust. She definitely knew how to entertain in style.7
One of Breadline Africa’s founder members, Frances Greathead was the first Chairman of Breadline Africa. It all started in August 1992 when Frances and a group of trustees met in the UK to review setting up a charity to fundraise in Europe to support local township projects to address poverty elimination. Several of the same trustees are still active in Breadline Africa today. At that meeting, Frances was elected chairman and held this position until she turned 80. Frances kept in touch with Breadline Africa on a regular basis always wanting to know what difference we were making to help the poor. Sadly, Frances passed away on 22 February 2020 but will be remembered by all as an amazing, passionate and inspirational lady, who in her hundred years made such a remarkable difference in the lives of so many.9 In March 2021 when the National Trust were going through some archives at Oxburgh Hall belonging to Sir Henry Paston-Bedingfield the father of Frances Greathead they discovered in the helmet he wore at the Boar War his chocolate, still in its original wrapper and tin, was part of a batch commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1900. As they were a gift from Queen Victoria, many soldiers preserved their chocolate tins, with some posting them back home for safekeeping. Queen Victoria commissioned three British producers - Fry, Cadbury and Rowntree - to produce more than 100,000 tins, each containing a half-pound of plain chocolate.
The National Trust said that, as pacifist Quakers who opposed the war, all three manufacturers refused to accept payment for the order and originally donated the chocolate in unbranded tins. It was intended every soldier and officer would receive a box with the inscription "South Africa 1900" and, in the Queen's handwriting, "I wish you a happy New Year".10
