Robert Atkinson1

     Robert Atkinson was born in 1851 in Carlton, Stokesley, Yorkshire, England.1,2 He married Elizabeth Verrill, daughter of William Verrill and Mary Sarah Haswell, in 1875 in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England.1,3 Robert was listed as the head of the family on the census of 3 April 1881 in 10 Red Lion Street, Redcar, Yorkshire, England, Robert was an ironstone miner living with his wife and two children. The family had a lodger called Jabez Atkinson aged 20.4 Robert was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 April 1891 in 45 Dale Street, Marske, Yorkshire, England, Robert was an ironstone miner.5 Robert was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in Crofton Avenue, Crofton, Yorkshire, England, Robert was the Colliery deputy for underground living with his wife and children.6 His wife Elizabeth died on 1908 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England.7 Robert was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1911 in 13 Ings Cottage, Crofton, Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, Robert was deputy at the Colliery below ground living with two of his daughters and two sons in his five roomed home. Robert and his late wife had 16 children 6 of which had died by 1911.8

     John Atkinson was born in 1890 in Marske, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of Robert Atkinson and Elizabeth Verrill.1 In the census of 5 April 1891 in 45 Dale Street, Marske, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Robert Atkinson.2 In the census of 31 March 1901 in Crofton Avenue, Crofton, Yorkshire, England, he was listed as the son of Robert Atkinson.3 John died in 1906 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England, in a mining accident at Walton pit in Sharlston. He was crushed by a runaway coal tub.4,5 John was buried in Crofton Churchyard, Crofton, Yorkshire, England, Elizabeth was buried in the same grave as her son John.4
