     Francis Eyton Spurling was born on 27 April 1885 in England.1 He married Mary Geraldine Greathead, daughter of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman, on 13 December 1913 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.1,2 He was a farmer at Egerton, Cradock District. he then became the Farm Manager at van Wyksfontein for JBS Greathead. He died in 1917 while on active service in France of wounds sustained at Passchendale. He was 2nd Lt Rifle Brigade.1,2

Philip James Greathead
     Philip James Greathead was born on 2 February 1920 in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa.1,2,3 He was the son of James Merriman Greathead and Dorothy Charlotte Greathead. Philip was serving with the South Africa land forces as a private service number 1094848and was held as a POW in Stalag IVB Muhlberg during WW2, his POW number was 225152.4 Philip arrived in Liverpool on board the ship Mauretania on 23 September 1945 from Wellington, New Zealand. He was described as a student from Christs College, Cambridge who was "travelling."5 He was a Civil Engineer. He married Lorna Mary Shapcott, daughter of Francis Royce Shapcott and Margaret Philo, on 21 April 1951 Lorna was Philip's first wife.1,2 His wife Lorna died on 7 October 1973 aged 47.1,2 He married Frances Mary Teresa Nimmo, daughter of Sir Henry Edward Paston-Bedingfeld and Sybil Lyne-Stephens, on 25 February 1978 Philip was Frances third husband.1 Philip died on 19 March 1997 in Kalk Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 77.1,2,3 Philip was buried on 24 March 1997 in Holy Trinity, Kalk Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, there is a bench dedicated to his memory in the gardens of Holy Trinity, Kalk Bay.2

     Kathleen May Collett was born on 12 May 1905 in Probus, Cornwall, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of William Hugh Collett and Elizabeth Jane Fugler. She was baptised on 28 June 1905 in Probus, Cornwall, England.2 She was a Nurse. She married Harold Merriman Greathead, son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Esther Louisa Merriman, on 6 April 1929 in Shamva, Southern Rhodesia, South Africa.1 Harold left South Africa for health reasons in 1930, so both children were born in England. Initially they experienced hard times because the contract to put a tunnel under the River Thames was cancelled because of the Depression and Harold was only able to find short term contracts on sewerage, the construction of a section of the Thames Embankment and the tube tunnelling project in London. Later he became Deputy Chief Civil Engineer at the BBC before returning to South Africa upon his retirement in 1951 with his wife and daughter Sarah. His son David stayed on in England to complete his studies at Imperial College, London University and then held various research posts in Africa until driven away from Uganda by General Idi Amin in 1973.4 Her husband Harold died on 28 June 1974 in 1 Thompson Street, Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 84.1,2,3,5,6 Kathleen died on 4 May 1994 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, aged 88.1,2,3 Kathleen was buried on 16 May 1994 in Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa.2

     Helen Mary Don was born on 26 August 1907 in Rangoon, Burma.1,3 She was the daughter of Frederick Alexander Don and Ethel F D Ponsford. In the Times newspaper of 30 September 1933 the engagement was announced of Edward and Helen. Edward was the youngest son of Mrs Greathead and the late Dr J B Greathead of Grahamstown, South Africa and Helen the elder daughter of Mrs Don of Langton Matravers in Dorset and the late Lieutenant - Colonel F Don IA.4 She married Edward Rivers Greathead, son of Dr John Baldwin Smithson Greathead M.B.Edin.,M.R.C.S., London and Ellen Annie Bubb, in 1933 in Kensington, London, England.1,5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register Helen was listed as living at Wallies Cote Meadow Side, Wareham, Dorset, England, with her two sons Peter and Simon, a yooung lad called Patrick D Young, possibly an evacuee and one other person.6 Her husband Edward died on 16 January 1948 in Pinetown, Natal, Durban, South Africa, aged 45 Edward earned the following initials after his name: M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P.1,3,7,8 Helen received probate on her husband's effects in England on 5 February 1949 in Pietermaritzberg.7 She married Robert Michael Ingall on 16 July 1949 in The Cathedral, Grahamstown, Cape Town, South Africa, after a special licence was issued by the Very Reverend J M Beaufort, Dean of Grahamstown. Lt Col Robert was with the Sherwood Foresters and was the younger son of Mr and Mrs F W Ingall.9,10 Helen died on 1 December 1989 in Kilmington, Devon, England, aged 82.1,3,11

     The family owned Angus Jute Mills. Initially Frederick worked on the Forth Bridge, then joined the army and was sent to India. He was a brilliant horseman and trainer. He served in Burma and China before becoming the Deputy Govenor of Aden. He was poisoned by Turks.1 Frederick Alexander Don was born in Scotland.1 He married Ethel F D Ponsford on 31 October 1906 in Mandalay, Burma.2,3 Frederick died on 25 May 1918 in Maalla, Aden, Yemen.1,2,4
