Frederick William James Parsons Merriman was born on 14 October 1854 in Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand.1,2 He was the son of Frederick Ward Merriman and Susannah Augusta Atkyns Greene.1 Frederick was tried at the Supreme Court on 20 February 1883 for forging and uttering on Robert Sayers, at Port Adelaide. He was sentenced to two years hard labour. He was described as a native of Auckland, New Zealand; a surveyor, five foot 7¾ inches tall, dark complexion, dark brown hair, grey eyes, medium nose inclined to left, round chin, vaccine marks on both arms and many tattoos. he was given his freedom in 15 July 1884.3 James was also known as James Parsons Maunsell and as such was listed on the Gaol Entrance book on 6 December 1895 as a sailor five foot 8½ inches tall, weight on committal 145 lbs. Brown hair, grey eyes and balding. He had several tattoos on his forearms, and spots and scars all over his body. He had been gaoled on four occasions in Victoria, in South Melbourne he was sentenced for one month for vagrancy, the last entry being in October 1992 when he was caught for stealing from a dwelling and given 6 months. Then he was gaoled six times in New South Wales in April 1993 he received in Albury 2 months. The last entrance in Young in January 1895 stealing again from a dwelling and given three years.4 On 22 July 1897 Frederick, now calling himself Frederick Merryman continued his offences, this time being sentenced 10 shilings or 3 days for being drunk and disorderly. Three months later he was given three years for forging a cheque. By then he was listed as a cook and having a feint heart.4 By 1 March 1900 Frederick is now calling himself Edward Jackson and continuing his life of criminal acts. He was sentenced to four years for breaking and entering. The last entry I found was on 17 October 1903 when he received 6 months for receiving and stealing.5 Frederick Morton alias Merriman was charged on stealing two hypodermic cases, needles and tabloids valued at £2 5s from a doctors consulting room after he visited it as a patient. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment and the case appared in the newspaper.2,6 Frederick stole and pawned a suitcase and handbag in 1914. He pretended not to remember the incidents but pleased guilty when taken to court on 1 June 1914. He was committed to the Supreme Court where he was sentenced to three years imprisonment and declared to be a habitual criminal.7,8 Frederick was once again up to his old tricks in 1922, he was using sevral aliases and appeared before the City Police Court on 10 March 1922 on two charges. He stole a number of ladies waering apparel valued at £70 10s 6d and secondly some jewellery. He pleased guilty and was imprisoned for six months and a further three months.9 Frederick died on 30 March 1925 in State Hospital, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, aged 70.2 Frederick was buried in Rookwood Catholic Cemetery, East Street, Lidcombe, Rookwood, New South Wales, Australia, in a paupers grave.2

John Henry Merriman was born on 29 December 1848 in Epping, Essex, England.1,2,3 He was the son of Charles Anthony Merriman and Catherine Langshaw.1 In the census of 30 March 1851 at Priness Street, Knutsford, Cheshire, England, he was listed as the son of Charles Anthony Merriman.4 He married Florence Edenborough on 29 May 1879 in St Stephen's, Hammersmith, London, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by Catherine Merriman, Horation Edenborough and Fanny Edenborough. Florence's father Horatio was a Major in the West Essex Royal Militia. She lived at 26 St Stephens Avenue, Shepherds Bush. JOhn gave his address as Knutsford in Cheshire.1,5 John was listed as head of household in the census of 31 March 1901 in The Village, Cranleigh, Surrey, England, John is listed as a retired member of the Madras Civil service living with his wife and two servants, a parlour maid and a cook.6 His wife Florence died on 1909 in Guildford, Surrey, England.1,7 In the census of 2 April 1911 in The Firs, West Byfleet, Surrey, England, he was listed as the brother of Julia Merriman Julia was living with private means in her ten roomed home with her brother, niece Katherine Pattison and two servants.8 John died on 2 June 1920 in Victoria Cottage, Woking, Surrey, England, aged 71 his usual address was Roslyn in Bisley.9,10 The will of John was proved on 8 September 1920 in London to Edward Langshaw Pattison a solicitor. His estate was valued at £5152 8s5d.10
