     Gilbert John Lane Buchanan was born in 1813 in Portsea, Hampshire, England.1,2 He was baptised on 27 March 1813 in Portsea, Hampshire, England.1 He married Julia Sophia Hammersley Wallace, daughter of Peter Margetson Wallace and Louisa Turmaine, on 14 June 1837 in Corfu, Greece.1,3 Gilbert was listed as the head of the family on the census of 7 June 1841 in 13 Rectory Place, Woolwich, London, England, Gilbert was living with his wife and yourng daughter Julia with three servants.4 Gilbert was listed as head of household in the census of 2 April 1871 in Oxford House, Portsea, Hampshire, England, Gilbert, a Major Genreal in teh Royal Artillary was living with his wife and daughter Fanny.5 Gilbert died on 13 April 1875 in 33 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, London, England, Gilbert rose to a General in the Royal Artillary before his death, like his father in law.1,6 The will of Gilbert was proved on 27 May 1875 at the Principal Registry to his wife Julia of Bishop's Wall, Chislehurst, Kent. His effects were valued at under £300.6
