Policemen

PC21 John Greathead was born in 1824 in Erith in Kent and is known to have been a policeman.  He married in 1852 and soon moved to London.  He was reported on the newspaper in 1856 and in 1861 was described as a Police Constable. He died in 1867.

 

George Greathead was born in 1819 in High Conniscliffe in Durham.  He married in 1847 and was listed as a Police Constable in 1851 census of Whickham in Durham.  He and his family moved to Crook by 1861 and in 1871 he was described as an innkeeper at the Kings Arms.  Policemen often became inn keepers.  By 1881 he was described as a Superanuated Police Sergeant, his wife died in 1884 and he remarried in 1886.  In 1891 he was again described as an innkeeper and he died in 1896
