William Greathead1

#24657, b. about 1814
Last Edited=19 Apr 2014
William Greathead was born about 1814.1 William came from East Renton in Durham and was a miner.2 Private William Greathead No 926 was described as single aged 30 of No 4 or Captain Mainwaring's Company Her Majesty's 22nd Regiment of Foot and was court marshalled at Poona on 19 November 1844. He deserted on the morning of 18 October 1844 and was brought back under escort. He was sentenced to seven years transportation. He was described as five foot seven and half inches tall with brown complexion, dark brown hair with blue eyes. He had a scar over his left eye, a tattooed mark on the inner part of his right forearm, a ring tattooed on the 4th finger of the right hand and the letter D on the left side, which was administered by the Army after being found guilty after his Court Martial. Presumably that was to define him as a deserter. It would appear that he was unable to read or write.2 William arrived on 1 January 1845 on board the convict ship Lady Franklin. The Lady Franklin was a barque of 295 tons which plied the waters around Australia in the early 1800s. She was sometimes used as a convict transport and sometimes to carry military personnel.3,4 I believe he was given his free certificate on 25 November 1851 and I believe he sailed steerage on board City of Melbourne leaving Launceston on 2 March 1852 bound for Melbourne with the status of Free. Melbourne was at that time in the throws of a gold rush. Did he make his fortune?5
