James Erasmus Methley was born on 18 February 1826 in St Giles, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He was the son of James Methley and Susanna Ruth Greathead.1 He was baptised on 3 April 1826 in Paternoster Row Wesleyan Methodist Registry, London, England.1 In the census of 6 June 1841 in Donningat, Market Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, he was listed as an apprentice to the Draper Samuel Meek.2 He married Isabella Forster Hodgson in 1854 in Darlington, Durham, England.1,3 It looks like James was booked to travel on the ship Inyoni leaving London on 21 November 1890 bound for Durban. His name however was crossed out in red on the ships manifest and the number of passengers amended. He was described as a married gentleman aged 65. I suspect he travelled a week later, leaving Southampton on 28 November aboard the ship Tartar.4 James was described as a 70 year old Merchant on the manifest of the ship Garth Castle that sailed from Durban, South Africa, arriving in London on 26 May 1892.5 He died on 4 February 1903 in Newstead, Natal, South Africa, aged 76.1
