James Erasmus Methley was born on 18 February 1826 in St Giles, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1,2,3 He was the son of James Methley and Susanna Ruth Greathead.1 He was baptised on 3 April 1826 in St Michael Wesleyan, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, The Register states: James Erasmus the son of James Methley of Oxford, in the Parish of St Giles’ in the County of Oxford and of Susanna Ruth his wife, who was the daughter of Thomas and Susanna Greathead was born at Oxford on the 18th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty six at whose birth were present John Symonds - Oxfords and Mary Symonds and was also solemny Baptized with water on the 3rd day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty six at Oxford by David McNicoll. Registered this 6th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight by John Mason, Registrar.1,4,5 In the census of 6 June 1841 in Donningat, Market Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, he was listed as an apprentice to the Draper Samuel Meek.6 He married Isabella Forster Hodgson on 15 March 1854 in Darlington, Durham, England.1,7,8 It looks like James was booked to travel on the ship Inyoni leaving London on 21 November 1890 bound for Durban. His name however was crossed out in red on the ships manifest and the number of passengers amended. He was described as a married gentleman aged 65. I suspect he travelled a week later, leaving Southampton on 28 November aboard the ship Tartar.9 James was described as a 70 year old Merchant on the manifest of the ship Garth Castle that sailed from Durban, South Africa, arriving in London on 26 May 1892.10 James died on 4 February 1903 in Newstead, Natal, South Africa, aged 76.1
