Gordon Pyper was born on 26 December 1850 in Newport, Fifeshire, Scotland.2,3 He was the son of John Pyper and Ann Davidson.3 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 24 Kirkgate Mertons, Leith, Midloathian, Scotland, he was listed as the son of John Pyper Gordon was only three months old.4 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 37 Scotland Street, Edinburgh, Midloathian, Scotland, he was listed as the son of John Pyper.5 Gordon travelled to Ceylon in 1872 to be a coffee planter. He started his employment with George Armstrong on the Rothschild Estate. This 2000-acre estate at Pussellawa was well known for its completeness and efficiency and was held up as a model for others. Rothschild tea was the standard for quality in Mincing Lane for over twenty-five years.

His brother and sister followed later. 1n 1880 he moved from coffee to tea (to Hantane and Roseneath - which was owned by Cap't. Aitcheson) because of the Coffee Crash (caused by Blight in the coffee crop) and was a pioneer of the industry. He planted 100 acres in 1884.

Home leave was granted after 10 years. He took all his baggage allowance in the form of spices and on arrival in the UK sold the spices and made enough to pay off the original loan from his Father of £100 and on his return to Ceylon to buy Hantane (a corruption of St Anthony), near Kandy. His obituary notes he bought other estates over the years.6 He married Eliza Black about 1875.7 Gordon's father was believed to be a Seafaring Captain possibly from Dundee. He sent his three sons off into the world with £50 each - one went to America, one to Austrailia and the third to Ceylon. Gordon Pyper being the third son went to Ceylon and worked on a coffee plantation. His son Gordon was born 1880 on the day the Banks foreclosed because of the Coffee Crash caused by a fungal blight. Gordon snr. then planted tea and was the pioneer in this industry, he employed his younger brother who finally left Ceylon to breed hogs in Iowa. Gordon came home with a trunk load of Nutmeg and Mace which he sold in London. When he went back to Ceylon and was able to buy a plantation with the procedings! This was later nationalised.2 His wife Eliza died on an unknown date in Old Scottish Cemetery, Kandy, Ceylon, she was aged 30.2 He married Alice Rachel Parry Okeden, daughter of William Parry Okeden and Julia Henrietta Greathed, on 16 July 1888.1,8,6 Gordon died on 21 February 1916 in Ceylon aged 65 Gordon was a teetotaller all his life.6 Gordon was buried in The Scots Kirk, Kandy, Sri Lanka, Ceylon.6 A memorial, brass celtic cross is in St Leonards Church, Dinnington, Yorkshire. This was erected by Gordon's daughter, Anne, at the Athorpe family chapel.6
