Failing health caused her to retire from teaching permanently in 1943 and to move out of her downtown house into the Fulton House, under the care of Mrs. Vera James. She was the last in her family line of school teachers.⁶ She died on 17 January 1944 in Fulton House, McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, aged 75 in a fire where the historic hostelry was destroyed.
