     Fanny Greathead was born in 1885 in Gornal, Staffordshire, England.1,2,3 She was the daughter of Silas Greathead and Eliza Lane. In the census of 5 April 1891 in 100 Kent Street, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Silas Greathead.4 Fanny was admitted into Tudor Primary School in Upper Gornal om 10 July 1893 and left on 8 February in 1895 having had goor attendance at school. The family lived in Fleet Street.5 In the census of 31 March 1901 in 1 Spike Meadow, Sedgley, Staffordshire, England, she was listed as the daughter of Eliza Price Eliza was now married to William Price Fanny was a domestic servant.6 In the census of 2 April 1911 in 62 Park Road, Stretford, Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, England, she was listed as the servant of Ernest and Edith Excell living in their seven roomed home. She was described as a domestic general servant.7 Fanny sailed from London to Adelaide in Australia on 9 October 1913 aboard SS Beltrana.8 She married James Alfred Clifford, son of William Thomas Clifford, on 29 May 1918 in Manse Hummock Hill, Fli, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.9,10,11 The South Australian Police Gazette of 31 October 1928 wrote that in Adelaide warrents of committment had been issued for the arrest of James Alfred Clifford, described as 35-40 years of age, 5 foot 9 inches tall of medium build, dark complexion, dark fairly curly hair and clean shaven. He was charged with failing to comply with orders against him in respect of maintenance of his wife and child, the arrears amounting to £47 15s. In default of payment, to be lodged in the Adelaide Gaol for six months.12 The Police Gazette of 14 November reported the warrents for his arrest had been withdrawn. Had he paid up!!!12 The Police Gazette of 1 May 1929 stated that a further warrent of commitment was issued and the arrears were £65 15s.12 Fanny died on 18 January 1981 in Gilles Plains, Port Adelaide, Enfield City, South Australia, Australia.13 Fanny was buried in Enfield Memorial Park, Port Adelaide, Enfield City, South Australia, Australia.14

     Rachel Sands was born on 17 August 1822 in Chatham, Kent, England, both her parents were born in England.2,3 She was the daughter of William Sands and Alice Richards.3 She married William Greathead, son of Joseph James Greathead and Sarah Dunstall, on 23 March 1850 in St Nicholas of Myra, Wesleyan Chapel, Rochester, Kent, England.1,4,3 William and Rachel moved to Chatham on 8 April 1850, then London on 25 September 1854 and then to Barnstaple on 18 June 1858. William's parents emigrated to Melbourne, Australia on 12 April 1853. Rachel's father William died in Chatham on 17 April 1853 and her mother Alice in December 1873 aged 93.3 In the census of 30 March 1851 at 308 High Street, Chatham, Kent, England, she was listed as the wife of William Greathead.5 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Belliar, Pilton, Barnstaple, Devon, England, she was listed as the wife of William Greathead.6 Her husband William died on 21 February 1864 in Barnstaple, Devon, England, aged 37.7,8 She emigrated on 1 July 1870 to Marshal Michigan, USA with her six children. Joseph James having died in 1856. They left on 1 July and arrived on 16 July 1870. Little Ernest fell down a hatchway on the ship during the journey to the USA and knocked out his baby teeth. When his permanent teeth came through they were all black so had to be removed and he wore false teeth all his life. Rachel took the family to stay with an aunt or cousins called Fletcher in Marshall, Michigan. She was naturalised in 1889.1 Rachel was listed as the head of the family on the census of 10 June 1880 in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan, USA, Rachel kept house.9,10 In the census of 1 June 1900 in San Francisco, California, USA, she was listed as the mother in law of Charles Hammond.11 In the census of 20 April 1910 in Oakland, Alameda, California, USA, she was listed as the lodger of Sarah Jane Hammond Lodging with her widowed daughter.12 She died on 8 January 1916 in Oakland, California, USA, aged 93 What a fantastic lady, widowed so early with six surviving children, the last one born around the same time as her husband’s death. Then she upsticked and move half way around the world. Her death notice appeared in the San Jose Mercury Herald of 11 January 1916. She was described as mother of Mrs Charles Hammond of Oakland, Mr F C Greathead of Denver, Colorado, Mr Ernest Greathead of Chicago and grandmother of Mr Arthur Greathead of San Jose.3,13 Under this gravestone in Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, Santa Clara, California, USA, is buried Rachel (Sands) Greathead, William Greathead, Sarah (Hammond) Greathead, Arthur Greathead and Mary (Ish) Greathead.14,15,16

William Sands Greathead
     William Sands Greathead was born on 15 February 1851 in Chatham, Kent, England.2,3 He was the son of William Greathead and Rachel Sands. In the census of 30 March 1851 at 308 High Street, Chatham, Kent, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.4 In the census of 7 April 1861 in Belliar, Pilton, Barnstaple, Devon, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead William was a scholar.5 The picture was taken by Hobcraft Photography 214 Oxford Street and the reverse is signed by William.6 He emigrated with Rachel Greathead on 1 July 1870 to Marshal Michigan, USA with her six children. Joseph James having died in 1856. They left on 1 July and arrived on 16 July 1870. Little Ernest fell down a hatchway on the ship during the journey to the USA and knocked out his baby teeth. When his permanent teeth came through they were all black so had to be removed and he wore false teeth all his life. Rachel took the family to stay with an aunt or cousins called Fletcher in Marshall, Michigan. She was naturalised in 1889.1 He married Sarah Estelle Hammond, daughter of William Hammond and Sarah Lovina Turner, on 14 June 1877 in Santa Clara, California, USA.1,7,8 William was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 10 June 1880 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California, USA, William was a dry goods clerk.9 William died on 25 February 1889 in 777 South Second Street, Santa Clara, California, USA, aged 38 The local newspaper wrote abou his death: "The announcement of the death of William Sands Greathead, while not unexpected, will shock a wide circle of friends. He died of bronchial asthma early yesterday morning at his home, 777 South Second street. He came to San Jose thirteen years ago, and for many years was manager for J.W. Cook in the dry goods business, from which position he was about four years ago compelled to retire, by reason of failing health. With a hope of regaining his health, he purchased a fruit farm, but he steadily declined, and all that mortal help could do to keep away the grim messenger was done but without avail. During his sickness he suffered intensely, and though he knew that his days were few never a word of complaint came from his lips and he passed off peacefully. Eleven years ago he married Miss Estelle Hammond and one child was the fruit of their union. He was a devout member of the Methodist Church. He was a member of Enterprise Lodge, No. 17, A.O.U.W. He was 38 years of age and a native of England. His funeral will take place to-morrow (sic) at 10 a.m."1,3,10,11 William was buried on 27 February 1889 at 10 o'clock from his home address.10 Under this gravestone in.12,11,13

In the census of 7 April 1861 in Belliar, Pilton, Barnstaple, Devon, England, he was listed as the son of William Greathead.4 He emigrated with Rachel Greathead on 1 July 1870 to Marshal Michigan, USA with her six children. He was aged 27 and born in London, she was aged 31 and born in Springs Prairie, Wisconsin.8 He married Cornelia I Beals on 28 September 1883 in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan, USA.9 He married Maude L Keeton on 2 July 1890 in Coloradp Springs, Colorado, USA.10 He married Nellie Wilcox, daughter of Forde M Wilcox and Mary Atlanta Webster, on 11 July 1895 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA.1,10 His wife Nellie died on 1908 in Colorado, USA.11,12 He married Jennie ... in 1910.11 Frederick was listed as the head of the family on the census of 20 April 1910 in Denver, Colorado, USA, Frederick was living with his new wife and children and his late wife's mother.13 Frederick was listed as the head of the family on the census of 5 January 1920 in Santa Margarita, San Luis, Obispo, California, USA, Frederick was living with his son Kenneth.14 Frederick was listed as the head of the family of on the census of 2 April 1930 in Havington Avenue, Oakland, Alameda, California, USA, Frederick was a book keeper at the cafeteria.15 It is believed that Frederick was the book keeper at the Colonial cafeteria owned by his sister Sarah in Oakland, California.3

     Sarah Jane Greathead was born on 25 September 1858 in Barnstaple, Devon, England.2,3 She was the daughter of William Greathead and Rachel Sands. In the census of 7 April 1861 in Belliar, Pilton, Barnstaple, Devon, England, she was listed as the daughter of William Greathead.4 She emigrated with Rachel Greathead on 1 July 1870 to Marshal Michigan, USA with her six children. Joseph James having died in 1856. They left on 1 July and arrived on 16 July 1870. Little Ernest fell down a hatchway on the ship during the journey to the USA and knocked out his baby teeth. When his permanent teeth came through they were all black so had to be removed and he wore false teeth all his life. Rachel took the family to stay with an aunt or cousins called Fletcher in Marshall, Michigan. She was naturalised in 1889.1 In the census of 10 June 1880 in Marshall, Calhoun, Michigan, USA, she was listed as the daughter of Rachel Greathead.5,6 She married Charles Hammond, son of William Hammond and Sarah Lovina Turner, on 14 June 1893 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA, Their licence number was 00303608.1,7,3,8 In the census of 1 June 1900 in San Francisco, California, USA, she was listed as the wife of Charles Hammond.9 Her husband Charles died on 2 September 1909 in San Jose, California, USA, aged 46.10 Sarah was listed as the head of the family on the census of 20 April 1910 in Oakland, Alameda, California, USA, She was listed as Mrs Charles Hammond, her mother in law was listed as a lodger and merchant restauranter. They were living together.11 It is believed that Frederick was the book keeper at the Colonial cafeteria owned by his sister Sarah in Oakland, California.3 Her Social Security Number was 552-24-0329 in California, USA.8 Sarah died on 10 July 1959 in Alameda, California, USA, aged 100.1,8

He had for twenty five years been the secretary of John at Roebling's Sons company of 171 Lake Street, Chicago.3,11,12,13 Alfred was buried on 23 May 1910 His obituary in the Chicago Daily Tribune of 22 May 1910 stated that he was survived by his widow and two daughters. The funeral was held at 2pm from the family residence and interment was at Mount Hope.11,13

     Nellie Wilcox was born in 1864 in Ohio, USA.2,3 She was the daughter of Forde M Wilcox and Mary Atlanta Webster.3 In the census of 10 June 1880 in Ash, Monroe, Michigan, USA, she was listed as the daughter of Forde M Wilcox.4 She married Frederick Charles Greathead, son of William Greathead and Rachel Sands, on 11 July 1895 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA.1,5 Nellie died in 1908 in Colorado, USA.3,6 She was buried in Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, Arapahoe County, Colorado, USA, in the same plot as her son Paul who died four years earlier. They share the same gravestone. He was buried as Paul Greathead.6

     William Paul Greathead was born in 1897 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, USA.1,2 He was the son of Frederick Charles Greathead and Nellie Wilcox. He died on 24 June 1904 in Cripple Creek, Denver, Colorado, USA, as a child. The report in the Denver Post of 25 June 1904 read: Paul Greathead, th 8 year-old son of Fred C Greathead of 2115 South Pennsylvania Avenue, who was seriously injured yesterday morning while playing in a small house that was being moved is now believed to be past all danger, althought it was first thought that he was fatally injured. In starting the horses the wagon gave a jerk and Paul fell through a trap door in the floor and was dragged several feet with the weight of the house rolling over him, before the team could be stopped.
It would seem he died not long afterwards.1,3,2,4 William was buried on 26 June 1904 in Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, Arapahoe County, Colorado, USA.5 William was buried as Paul Greathead in Littleton Cemetery, Littleton, Arapahoe County, Colorado, USA, his mother was buried in the same grave four years later.3
