     Gordon Pyper was born in Ceylon in 1880 on the day the Banks foreclosed because of the Coffee Crash caused by a fungal blight.1 He was the son of Gordon Pyper and Eliza Black.1 In the census of 31 March 1901 in St Osyths, Bournemouth, Dorset, England, he was listed as the son of Alice Rachel Parry Okeden.2 Gordon travelled back to Ceylon in 1901 with £30 in his pocket, when he was twenty years old and was put in charge of a tea estate and told to get on with it.3 He married Ruth Campbell in 1914.1 His wife Ruth died on 1926 in Ceylon she is buried beside her mother in law in Kandy.3

In the census of 30 March 1851 at Regent Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, he was listed as the son of Daniel Banham he was a scholar.4 In the census of 7 April 1861 in 69 Regent Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, he was listed as the son of Daniel Banham Daniel was an undergraduate at Cambridge College.5 He married Frances Elizabeth Dinnis in 1863 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1,6 Daniel was a clerk in Holy Orders. He was the curate at St Pauls Church, Cambridge and at the same time a maths master at Bishop Stortford School.
