She was baptised on 16 August 1896 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, her father was a bailiff and the family lived in Shamley Green.1 She was the daughter of Thomas John Elwin and Clara Elwin in the 1901 census in Lapscombe Farm, Cranleigh, Surrey, England.3 She was the daughter of Thomas John Elwin and Clara Elwin in the 1911 census in Willinghurst, Shamley Green, Surrey, England. Thomas was a bailiff living with his wife and two children. They had a visitor Ada Frances Churchilll who was aged 38 and an elementary school mistress.4 She witnessed the marriage of Marian Olive Jackson and Thomas Henry Elwin on 21 May 1934 in St John the Evangelist, Stoke, Guildford, Surrey, England.5 On 29 September 1939 in the National Register she was listed as living at 36 Birtley Road, Bramley, Surrey, England, with her brother Thomas Clara was a bakers shop assistant presumably in her brothers shop.
