Fletcher Norton was born on 14 July 1796 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2,3 He was the son of Hon Fletcher Norton and Caroline Elizabeth Balmain.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire. He fought in the Battle of Quartre Bras gaining the rank of officer in the service of the Grenadier Guards. He fought in the Battle of Waterloo, where he was wounded. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Grantley, Baron of Markenfield, Co. York [G.B., 1782] on 12 November 1822. He held the office of High Steward of Allerton and Guildford. He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.)1 He married Charlotte Earle Beechey, daughter of William Beechey and Ann Phillis Jessop, on 26 July 1825 in All Souls, St Marylebone, London, England, after a special licence had been issued at Sir William Beecheys residence 15 Harley Street, Cavandish Square in London. The ceremony was witnessed by W Beechey, Walter Skinner, Wm Leake and Winifred Chapple Norton. Charlotte and Fletcher had no children.4 He was listed as head of household in the 1851 census in Wonersh Mansion, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Fletcher and his wife Charlotte had eight servants. Fletcher was Lord Baron of Grantley of Markenfield.5 He died on 28 August 1875 in Wonersh Park, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 79.6,7,3 He was buried on 4 September 1875 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.8 His estate was probated on 12 February 1876 in the Principal Registry under certain specialties to Francis Grevile Prideaux, an accountant of 48 Lincolns Inn Fields, His effects were valued at under £16,000. This grant ceased and expired and the wlill was proved in the Principal Registry in July 1876.7

George Chapple Norton was born on 31 August 1800.1 He was the son of Hon Fletcher Norton and Caroline Elizabeth Balmain.1 He married Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Sheridan, daughter of Thomas Sheridan and Caroline Henrietta Callander, on 30 July 1827 in St George Hanover Square, London, England, after a licence had been issued. The ceremony was witnessed by CB Sheridan, Georgina Callendae, Douglas Kinward, Caroline Sheridan, JG Sheridan, HJ Blackwood and many others.2 He held the office of Recorder of Guildford and was a Metropolitan Police Magistrate. In 1836 he sued the Prime Minister Lord Melbourne for £10,000 for having 'criminal conversation' (adultery) with his wife. Although he lost the case Norton locked his wife out of the marital home and forbade her to see her children again. He also refused to pay her maintenance or pay any of her debts.1,3 He died on 24 February 1875 in Wonersh Mansion, Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 74 of liver disease.1,3

Hart.3 He died in 1905 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1,2,3 He was buried on 30 March 1905 in St Davids, Weem, Perth, Scotland, The coffin conveying the remains arrived in Aberfeldy by train from Edinburgh and onto St David's Episcopal Church and buried in the family vault.2,3

Fletcher Norton was born on 23 June 1716 in Markenfield, Yorkshire, England.1 He was the son of Thomas Norton and Elizabeth Serjeantson. He married Grace Chapple, daughter of William Chapple and Trehane Clifton, on 21 May 1741 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2 He had been a practising barrister since 1739 and was invested as a King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1754. He held the office of Recorder of Guildford. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Appleby between 1756 and 1761 and for Wigan between 1761 and 1768. He was invested as a Knight in 1762. He held the office of Solicitor-General between 1762 and 1763 and Attorney-General between 1763 and 1765. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Guildford between 1768 and 1782 and was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1769. He was Speaker, House of Commons between 1770 and 1780. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.)
From the time of his marriage Fletcher began acquiring property in Wonersh and Guildford, buying Great Tangley Manor in 1759, pulling down a large part of the existing house and turning the remainder into a farm.1 In 1780 Fletcher was not re-elected but on a change of government on 9 April 1782 he was made Baron of Markenfield under the name of Lord Grantley, from the village in Yorkshire in which he had been born.1 His contemporaries for the most part had not a good word to say for him, his nickname being 'Sir Bull Face Double Fee', from his alleged willingness to accept fees from both parties in law suits.1 He died on 1 January 1789 in Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 72.1

She married John Charles Wallop, son of John Wallop and Urania Fellowes, on 19 November 1799 in Wonersh House, Wonersh, Surrey, England, by a special licence. John Charles Wallop was born on 18 December 1767.1 He was the son of John Wallop and Urania Fellowes. He married Grace Chapple Norton, daughter of Fletcher Norton and Grace Chapple, on 19 November 1799 in Wonersh House, Wonersh, Surrey, England, by a special licence. John was the Rt Hon 3rd Earl of Portsmouth. The ceremony was witnessed by Coulson Wallop, 'Grantley' and Urania Portsmouth (mother of the groom.)2 His wife Grace died on 15 November 1813 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.3 He married Mary Anne Hanson on 17 March 1814 John was adjudged to have been insane since 1809. In 1828, his second marriage was annulled, and Mary Anne's children were declared bastards, it is believed they were not the children of John. A judgment for the £40,000 cost of the trial was issued against her, and she fled abroad to Canada, where she died destitute in 1870.1 He died on 14 July 1853 at age 85 The register lists him as Walloh Earl of Portsmouth John Charles (the tail of the p is missing.)1,4

William Norton was born on 19 February 1742 in Wonersh, Surrey, England.1 He was the son of Fletcher Norton and Grace Chapple. William was MP for Richmond 1768-1774, MP for Wigtoun Burghs 1774-1775, MP for Guildford 1782-1784 and Surrey 1784-1789.1 William became 2nd Baron Grantley upon the death of his father on 1 January 1789.1 He married Anna Margaretta Midggley on 27 September 1791 They had two children both sadly died infancy.1 His wife Anna suddenly died on 16 April 1795 in Wonersh, Surrey, England, She was gettng ready to attend the Queen's ball when she collapsed. William never remarried.1 He died on 12 November 1822 in Wonersh, Surrey, England, at age 80 his obituary the Gentleman's Magazine could not praise him too highly, saying he was affable, couteous, benignantand cheerful with a polish of manner in the villages on his estates he was known to all and beloved by all, even the children of the peasantry who he never failed to notice with tenderness and affection... and years will roll after years before he ceases to be mentioned in those places as 'the good Lord Grantley.1' He was buried on 24 November 1822 in St John the Baptist, Wonersh, Surrey, England.2

Charlotte Earle Beechey was born on 3 August 1801 she was the youngest daughter of Sir William Beechey, a painter and Ann Phillis.1 She was the daughter of William Beechey and Ann Phillis Jessop. She was baptised on 20 January 1802 in St James, Paddington, London, England.2 She married Fletcher Norton, son of Hon Fletcher Norton and Caroline Elizabeth Balmain, on 26 July 1825 in All Souls, St Marylebone, London, England, after a special licence had been issued at Sir William Beecheys residence 15 Harley Street, Cavandish Square in London. The ceremony was witnessed by W Beechey, Walter Skinner, Wm Leake and Winifred Chapple Norton. Charlotte and Fletcher had no children.3 She was the wife of Fletcher Norton in the 1851 census in Wonersh Mansion, Wonersh, Surrey, England. Fletcher and his wife Charlotte had eight servants. Fletcher was Lord Baron of Grantley of Markenfield.4 She witnessed the death of Fletcher who died on 28 August 1875 in Wonersh Park, Wonersh, Surrey, England.5,6,7 She died on 1 May 1878 in 28 Regency Square, Brighton, Sussex, England, at age 76.8,6 She was buried on 8 May 1878 in Christ Church, Shamley Green, Surrey, England, after a service in St John the Baptist in Wonersh.9
Her estate was probated on 20 May 1878 in the Principal Registry by Rev St Vincent Beechey of Hilgay in Norfolk, Rector of Hilgay and Hon Canon of the Cathedral of Manchester, her brother and Hugh Frederick Jackson of 12 Essex Street, Strand in London her nephew. Her effects were valued at under £20,000.6

Fletcher Cavendish Charles Conyers Norton was born on 10 July 1829. He was the son of George Chapple Norton and Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Sheridan. He was the son of Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton in the 1851 census in 3 Chesterfield Street, St George Hanover Square, London, England. Fletcher was described as a Diplomatist.1 He died on 13 October 1859 in Paris, France, at age 30 from tuberculosis.2,3
