A reception was held at the bride's residence. the happy couple subsequently left for a short honeymoon, the bride's travelling costume being of navy blue serge, with a hat of black velvet and white ostrich feathers. Mr and Mrs C D Hodgson, of The Hallams, lent the bride their pair-horse carriage for the ceremony. Adm. at the Middle Temple, Jan. 24, 1870.2 Arthur was an Examiner under the Board of Education, 1870-87. A partner in the publishing firm of Rivington (afterwards Longmans, Green and Co.), 1887-92. Editorial Manager to Cassell and Co., 1892-4. Assistant Commissioner to the Commission on Secondary Education, 1894. Professor of Italian Language and Literature at University College, London, 1898-1910. At the Public Record Office, editing ‘Calendars of Foreign State Papers,’ 1899-1910. He was widely known for his translations of and contribution to the study of Dante; also translated many French and German works. A regular contributor to the Athenaeum for 35 years; wrote the chapters on ‘The Wars of Religion in France’ and ‘The End of the Italian Renaissance’ for the Cambridge Modern History. A member of the Alpine Club, 1886; edited the Alpine Journal, 1890-3.
