Written and directed by Joseph L Mankiewicz, this Hollywood Classic stars Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a highly regarded but aging Broadway star.  Anne Baxter is Eve Harrington a willing helpful young fan who insinuates herself into Margo’s life, ultimately threatening her career and personal relationships.  The marvellous supporting cast (particularly George Sanders) are well served by a first class script.

All About Eve was nominated for 14 Academy Awards (a record) and won six, and was voted number 16 in the AFI list of the 100 best American films

A critically acclaimed film from the Spanish Director, Pedro Almodovar, featuring a cast of strong and resourceful women (and the occasional man) led by Penelope Cruz.  This is a film that is both warm and funny, yet filled with a deep genuine emotion.

Volver (Spanish “to return”) won two awards at Cannes Film Festival 2006 for Best Actress (shared by the six main actresses) and Best Screenplay as well as numerous other nominations and awards

The Fallen Idol       UK 1948        91 minutes

A neglected masterpiece from the great British Director, Carol Reed, based on a short story by Grahame Greene.  The story is told through the eyes of a diplomat’s young son, Phillipe (Bobby Henrey) who idolizes the diplomat’s butler, Baines, (Ralph Richardson)

The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Direction and Best Adapted Screenplay and won the BAFTA Award for best British Film (1949)
