Whether you are, or were a Greathead, related to a Greathead, enjoy one of the variants Gratehead, Greatheed, Greathed, Greethead, Grethed, Greated or just interested in the family I hope you find items of interest within these pages.  One day maybe I will discover that we are all related.  Do have fun exploring the following pages

BREAKING NEWS

Whether you are, were, or a related to a Greathead or one of it's variants. Come to London on Saturday 30 April 2011 and meet us at 12 Noon by the Statue of James Henry Greathead.  We plan to have a group photograph and all adjourn to a local pub for "a pie and pint" and discover how we are all related.  Let ME know if you are interested so I can ensure your tree is brought to the meet.

Bring pictures, certificates, bibles, information but most of all bring YOURSELF and YOUR family.  Looking very forward to seeing you there.  I can give full instructions how to get there if you need them

Malcolm II King of Scotland in 1056 had a surname of Canmore, which translates as Greathead.

Robert Grosseteste the Bishop of Lincoln is believed to be related.  He was a Statesman, scholar and theologian 1175 - 1253

The name Greathead appears in London and Whitby, in the 14th and 15th Century.

Johnis Gretheede de Batley 1576

John, Joshua and Joshua Jnr Greathead appear in the hearth tax lists in 1666 in Morley area of Yorkshire

See more details Can you find where they fit into the Greathead story?

Tom Greathead to a fellow tourist "Yes sir! We are indeed a very ancient family. That is a bust of one of my earliest ancestors"

The surname GREATHEAD seems to mean just that;  someone with a remarkably large head, in the real or perhaps colloquial sense, or maybe they enjoyed rather a large ego.  I like to think maybe the large head contains brains used to achieve whatever we choose to do.  It corresponds to the French Grossête and the German Groeskopf.

My maiden name was GREATHEAD and I am attempting a One-Name Study on the name of GREATHEAD. This will include eventually everyone who enjoyed the name by birth, adoption, marriage or by choice, both living and dead.

I have registered this study with the Guild of One-Name Studies. Membership number 3994.  I was elected their Secretary on 10 April 2010

Can YOU help me?  I would love to hear from you. Do look at my brickwalls. Can YOU resolve any of my Challenges?
